Man there have been a lot of GREAT QB's in this state the last 15 years!!!!

I was looking at a thread from earlier in the year and Burke had 49 TD's and 2 Int's through 9 games! That is CRAZY! I think he finished with somewhere in the neighborhood of 62 T.D.'s and 6 int's.

Burke deserves to be considered one of the better QB's we have seen in KHSAA football.

You think thats crazy? Try 45 TDs with one int. while going undefeated against the likes of Elder (later became D1 champion of Ohio), St. X (always a tough opponent) and Male (featuring Mike Bush and a number of other D1 signees). Oh yeah, and that was his junior year sandwiched between two other state championships. I saw Burke a few times including his dismantling of Bowling Green in December but I also remember him getting destroyed by X at Manual Stadium. He is a top notch QB and probably top ten in the past ten years in Kentucky. It is hard to tell prior to that as a great number of great QBs didn't play in offenses that would ever allow them to toss 50 or 60 TD passes although some probably could have.

That's why I would probably go Brohm, Burke, Couch. Couch is a tough one because he didn't have the weapons the other two had but he also didn't play the defenses those two did. I think Johnson Central picked couch off like 4 times at least in one game. I am also talking about QB's of my time. It's hard for me to gauge against QB's from way back. The game has changed so much since then that you really can't compare the old eras to modern football.

Look at the teams he was getting most of those against. Didn't he throw 9 against one team? If I am wrong about that I appologize and will change my tune. But I still say Couch was the best with Brohm a close second. I believe after that you could insert a number of QB's.

Burke led a couple of 80 yard drives on St X( that game was who had the ball last as he took over in the 2nd half and called the majority of his own plays which St X had no answer for)and Trinity (although that was a scrimmage). He also hung 49 on Scott Co, in the 40's on Boyle Co + Rockcastle a bunch on Cov Cath etc. I don't think you can make any kind of argument that he couldn't move the ball on big teams.

That is nuts I don't care who you play for.

Couch couldn't beat Highlands and win the state championship because of his supporting cast. Unfair comparison if you are comparing the talent surrounding Tim Couch at Leslie County and the talent supporting Justin Burke at Lexington Catholic.

Good point, I guess I never really thought of that, but I should have.

I'd go:

Brohm, Burke, Couch tier one

J-Lo, Guduli, Haddix, J. Brohm, Redmond tier two

Grutza, Neff, Duggins, Todd etc after them. Just my opinion though.

Be careful, just because Bush is a back now, don't forget his exploits at QB at Male. He belongs in this list without a doubt. Just my opinion, on the above list, I would switch Redmon and J-Lo to tier one and move Burke to tier two.

His winning percentage and statistics certainly justify being mentioned in this company.

 

One knock might be on the level of competition he played against, but the same could be said about Tim Couch at Leslie County.

One other thing. And this isn't a knock on Burke, just an observation. The reason Tim Couch is probably sitting on the couch today and hasn't had that second shot is that in college, he was protected by his "system". Or at least that's what the NFL scouts said. They wondered about how much he really had to do vs. the ability to succeed with that offense as long as he had good receivers. I think the same thing could be said of Burke as Coach S's system worked very well to hide the flaws of a QB. At the same time, its hard to argue those TD vs. interception numbers. Even with the system perfect, you have to know when to throw it AND when not to.

You make an excellent point and very good comparison between the two systems.

I forgot all about Bush and agree. He was the best all around athlete of the group.

I don't by the system deal. There isn't a QB listed that wasn't helped by his system. They all had screen passes and all got athletes the ball in space. Brohm hit McBroom down the field a lot but Burke hit Caldwell deep a lot. Bush's whole system is screens. Brohm's Offensive Coordinator has videos out on how to run the screen so I think the "system" argument is a little overrated at the High School level. When you are in the NFL trying to throw the deep out it's a little different.
