Alison Grimes' Campaign Announcement

Featured Replies

Grimes had implicated last week that she was still interested in running for a state office in Kentucky. She's currently making campaign announcement at a press conference in Lexington. The video feed from the C-J keeps breaking up here, but a lot of folks are thinking she will throw her hat in the ring as a candidate for governor. Seems like there may be a bit of credence to the rumors, seeing as Former Gov Martha Layne Collins - the first and only female governor of Kentucky - was the woman who introduced Grimes at the presser.

Does her run against Senator McConnell hurt her, help her, or have no bearing on her re-election campaign for Secretary of State?

Does she have a law degree and experience as a prosecutor? Some have said she would go for Atty Gen and take Conway's spot. Supposedly Conway really worked his contacts for fund raising for her so I could see her hoping to following in Conway's steps IF she has the legal back ground for the position.

I think she'll probably be fine. Electoral bias in favor of incumbents is still very strong, despite recent happenings in congressional elections.

She has a masters in political science and a law degree.

Well, that was kind of a letdown. All this talk and she's going for the same office.

I would like to see her get a real, private sector job for a few years, then come back to politics if she so desires. Real meaning not related to politics, lobbying, etc.

Thank goodness she is not running for Governor.

This is the best choice for now, and the always at top of her list. If she didn't run for U.S. Senate, or the governor's race was in 2016, then maybe a run for governor, Conway has a great relationship with the family and he is well on his way in his campaign, so running for governor really wasn't a serious thought. She has done a number of things to help Kentuckians already, so continuing her present job is the best choice for now.

I believe she already had a real, private sector job for a few years prior to her first run as Sec of State.

Grimes was a practicing attorney in Lexington. She served as an associate at Stoll Keenon Ogden from 2004 to 2011, specializing in intellectual property and complex business litigation. She credits a domestic abuse case she won as helping to inspire her to pursue a political career.

You are right.

And..I can't knock the legal profession too much since I raised two of them.

I think her smart move is to run against Andy Barr in 2018. She will win reelection for SOS pretty easily. Then she can take down a vulnerable seat in the US House, work her way back for a chance at Senate once Mitch retires. (The other seat is going to be too hard to predict right now with Rand's future up in the air.)

There are hardly many easy wins for statewide offices for Democrats in Kentucky.

Also such a big loss on the National stage with so many mistakes isn't easy to wash off.

They did pretty good in the last election. I believe Comer was the only Republican to win. All others were democratic victories. This go round should be a little more GOP friendly. The Gov's office has two Repubs who are doing well (Heiner and Comer) and will give Conway a run for his money and could possibly beat him. I don't know much about those running for Atty Gen. Allison will win Sec of State pretty easily. I believe Hollenbach can no longer run for Treasurer so the GOP could take that. I don't know much about those running for Commish of Ag. I feel like I am forgetting an office. If so which?
