Greyhounds win 3

 

Terence Brooks' Paris team won all 3 contests this past week. The Hounds shot nearly 55% from the floor in a Tuesday night 77-60 road win against Bracken County. Balance was key for Paris, with 4 players reaching double figures. Koebe Garrard and Jekobi Wells both had 16, while Wan Dumphord had 14 and James Clark 13. Paris stayed at home for 2 games over the weekend, starting with a Friday night 80-35 whipping of Nicholas County. A pair of Greyhounds earned double-doubles: Garrard finished with 20 points & 14 rebounds and senior big man William O'Bryan had 10 points & 11 boards. Three others reached double figures, with Wells getting 17 points, Clark 13 points, and senior guard Jamaal Washington 11 points. Saturday proved a tougher test, but Paris came out on top against 16th Region foe Fleming County by a score of 59-53. Garrard again led with 20 points & 9 rebounds. Clark added 14 points, Wells 12, and Washington 11.

 

Royals rout Holmes, squeak by Pendleton

 

Mason County opened some eyes on Tuesday night in sending 15th ranked Holmes back to Covington with a 70-46 shellacking. Even though the Royals finished 0-5 from the 3-point line, the team shot a sizzling 61.7% from the floor. Dorian Henry had a monster night of 35 points & 11 rebounds, hitting 14-20 FG's. Dee Johnson added 13 points & Jake O'Mara 10 points in the win. More eyes were opened in Mason County's Friday night game at Pendleton County, but for a different reason. The Wildcats held an 11 point lead at intermission before Chris O'Hearn's club outscored the hosts 20-9 in the 3rd quarter to tie it at 56. The Royals finally outlasted Pendleton in a 77-71 win, led by Henry's 21 points & 13 rebounds. Dee Johnson and Ryan Johnson added 17 and 16 points respectively.

 

GRC, Campbell both win 2

 

George Rogers Clark finished up its 4-game home-stand last week with a pair of victories, beginning with at 79-72 Tuesday night win over Grant County. Leading by 1 after the 1st quarter, the Cardinals outscored the Braves 26-11 in the 2nd quarter and never looked back. Damion King topped GRC with 21 points and his back court mate Braxton Greene chipped in with 15. Jyles Anderson had 13 and James Cornelius 12. The Cards got it done beyond the arc as well, connecting on 8-19 3pt FG's. Another out-of-region foe traveled to Winchester on Friday night, in the form of the Rowan County Vikings. King scored a season-high 30 points and Greene had another nice offensive night with 23 points, as Clark ran away with a 74-53 win.

 

Campbell County also went 2-0 at home last week. The Camels first victim was 37th District opponent Silver Grove on Tuesday night. A dozen Campbell County players scored in an 84-43 rout, led by Blake Losey's 18 points, Dre Jackson's 17, and Jordan Day's 12. Aric Russell's team coasted again on Thursday night in a 73-46 victory over Highlands. The Camels hit 10-16 3's and were led by Jackson's 16 points. Losey finished with 13, Day with 11, and junior point guard Trent McGovney added 10 points. After losing 3 straight, the Camels have now won 4 of 5.

 

One and Done- Part 1

 

With some nasty weekend weather, several 10th Region squads played just once last week. In this section, we'll highlight those who came out on the winning side. Scott cruised in a Saturday night 73-57 win over Silver Grove. 11 Eagles scored in the game, led by Jake Ohmer's 17 and Blake Schneider's 15.

 

Montgomery County turned back upset-minded Bourbon County 78-72 in Mt. Sterling on Friday night. Caswell Fuller had a sensational performance of 28 points & 10 assists. Junior big man Shelby Combs played well also, finishing with 17 points & 9 rebounds.

 

D.J. Jenkins scored 14 points, Trenton Thompson 13, and Robbie Stroub 10 in Harrison County's 62-53 win over visiting Bishop Brossart on Tuesday night. The Thorobreds led 22-11 after the 1st quarter and kept the Mustangs at bay the rest of the way.

 

After spending most of last week basking in the glory of its Class "A" championship, Augusta resumed play on Friday night in an 85-72 home win over Robertson County. Junior forward Camryn Snapp joined the 1,000 points club in the victory and finished with a team-high 20 points. Connor Maddox scored 17, Nathan Shrader 14, and Owens Crawford had 13. The Panthers will enter Thursday nght's Class "A" State Tournament game opposite Owen County riding a 7-game winning streak.

 

One and Done- Part 2

 

Three other 10th Region squads played just 1 game last week, but came out on the short end of the stick. Austin Crawford scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Bracken County's 77-60 loss to Paris on Tuesday. Junior guard Kolton Williams added 12 for the Polar Bears in a losing effort.

 

In Bishop Brossart's 62-53 road loss at Harrison County on Tuesday, Spencer Hackworth scored a team-high 17 points. The Mustangs had a rought night shooting, though, hitting just 36.8% of their shots. Jackson Crawford did have a double-double of 12 points & 13 boards. Gabe Roberts also had 10.

 

Calvary Christian fell to 8th Region foe Trimble County 76-53 on Saturday. The Cougars are slated to visit Bishop Brossart in a 37th District seeding game tonight, but will square off with Covington Latin later in the week--a team it just beat on January 15th.

 

Saints win 3 straight

 

St. Patrick enjoyed a very nice 3-0 finish last week, with all games played in Maysville. Monday night the Saints turned back Robertson County 63-44 led by Andrew Sticklen's 17 points & 9 rebounds. On Friday the Saints beat 8th Region opponent Gallatin County 74-57 and Sticklen dominated with 27 points & 14 rebounds. Freshman forward Ben Swolsky continued his strong play with 15 points & 7 rebounds. Finally, 4 Saints reached double figures in Saturday's 72-48 win over Williamstown. Sticklen paced the winners with 20 points & 16 rebounds. Swolsky and junior wing Jakaar Frey had 11 points, while senior forward Bailey Jodrey chipped in with 10.

Bourbon, Nicholas with mixed results

 

Bourbon County had a pair of relatively close games over the weekend, winning one and losing one. The Colonels fell at Montgomery County 78-72 on Friday, despite getting 27 points from senior guard Landon Sexton. But Bourbon rebounded on Saturday, scoring an 86-81 home win over 12th Region foe East Jessamine. The Colonels hit a whopping 14-27 3pt FG's in the win and were led by Micahel Baker's 25 points on 7-11 3pt shooting. Sexton added 23 of his own, while Austin Jones scored 15 and Ameryon Blackburn 10.

Roger Newton's Nicholas County club started last week with a 73-50 home win over Robertson County on Tuesday. The Jackets put three players in double figures: Devin Trussell led with 18, Tyler Newton had 16, and Elijah Barnett finished with 14. On Friday night, Nicholas trailed Paris 23-5 after 1 quarter and never could find any footing, ultimately losing 80-35 on the road. But the team came back on Saturday and notched an 83-70 win over Menifee County in Carlisle, led by Newton's 30 point performance. Ben Duncan contributed 15 points and Dillon Webb had 13.

 

Pendleton, Silver Grove, Robertson winless last week

 

Three 10th Region teams played more than 1 game last week and fell short in each outing. Keaton Belcher's Pendleton County team lost a pair of tight home contests, beginning with Tuesday's 55-52 loss to Highlands. The Wildcats trailed at halfitme and after the 3rd quarter, but they were up 52-50 with just over a minute to play before the Birds scored the game's final 5 points. Michael Antrobus scored 17 to lead Pendleton in the losing effort, while Hunter Lea added 13 and Hunter Wood 12. Friday night was the much-discussed 77-71 loss to the Region's top squad Mason County--a game that saw the Cats hit 11-24 3's and shoot 51% from the field. Pendleton controlled the first half before the Royals evened things up in the 3rd quarter and then pulled away in the 4th. Antrobus scored 16 to lead the Wildcats. Lea added 15 points & 8 boards. Junior guard Tanner Pugh chipped in with 14 points and fellow junior Wade Browning had 13.

 

Silver Grove finished 0-3 last week, with the aforementoned 84-43 loss at Campbell County starting things off on Tuesday. The Trains lost at home on Thursday, 41-38, to School for Creative Performing Arts (OH). Silver Grove ended the week with the 73-57 loss to Scott, but Howard Brownstein's team did get 22 points & 12 rebounds from Billy Miller in the contest, with Randy Kuntz adding 19 points.

 

John Brown's Robertson County Black Devils saw the floor more than any other 10th Region team last week, but unfortunately for them, lost each outing. Three road losses to St. Patrick on Monday (63-44), Nicholas County on Tuesday (73-50), and Augusta on Friday (85-72) were followed by a home loss to Walden on Saturday, by a score of 56-49. Senior wing Dawson Cooper led the Black Devils in scoring each of the four outings, averaging 20.2 ppg during the stretch. Robertson will hope to break its current 5-game losing streak on Friday night at Silver Grove.
