The Favorite

 

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds have now won 10 of the previous 14 All A Region Championships. The Breds have owned this tournament and are looking for not only their third consecutive region championship, but a third straight state championship as well. Led by one of the most talented trios in the state, in seniors Zack Pangallo (11.3 ppg), Drew McDonald (19.9 ppg, 10.9 rpg), and junior Ben Weyer (18.6 ppg, 8.4 rpg); there is no team in the 9th region in this tournament that can match up with them and the Breds should be considered a heavy favorite at the state level as well.

 

The Challengers

 

The lower bracket should be much more competitive than what we will see in the upper bracket, with Newcath cruising to the finals.

 

St Henry, Holy Cross, and Newport have rounded out the 9th region top 10 in the two most recent "Inside the 9th Region" rankings and should provide some great match ups leading up to the finals. Any of those three could make the finals and it would come as no surprise to most around Northern Kentucky.

 

While St Henry is a slight favorite to reach the finals, both Newport and Holy Cross are good enough to beat the Crusaders, for what will likely be a match up with the Thoroughbreds.
