Steve Stonebraker named Head Coach at Jeffersontown

Featured Replies

Steve Stonebraker, the Head Coach at Woodford County High this past year, was named the new Head Football Coach at Jeffersontown High School early this week. This leaves the job at Woodford County open, which in all honesty could be a sleeping giant with the talent it has ergo Drake Jackson.

Can a mod change the spelling to Jeffersontown in the thread title? I don't know what I was looking at.

Kind of a surprising hire. Wonder if he plans on using the Wishbone Triple Option offense at J-Town. Not sure that is going to work in that district against those teams. But I wish him luck there for sure.

Surprised by move . Good luck !

He is an OLineman not an All America QB. Don't get me wrong great player but he is one kid

Ya know, it might not. To go a step further, I doubt he will run that at J-town....but, maybe..who knows?

What kills me though? Go to a school like J-town or any other and go .500 or less run something flashy, in particular, something spread based and all is right in the world.

Very much a family based move/decision as it gets with him taking the J-Town job.

I don't think he had much time left at Woodford. That job has been rumored to be open the last two years almost daily.

They are monsters across the board up front. I believe they all return, lead by Drake of course.

Speakinf of monsters, their sister district is just that. A State Champ (Highlands), a State Runner Up (Dixie) and one that had it not been for Highlands last year, is playing for the State Championship (CovCath).

Unless they win the district, giants are staring them in the face round 1 every year.

I know a lot of people are probably scratching their heads wondering why somebody would take a job in a district w/ any of the Big 3...but, when you look at what Woodford was facing in their region, I'm not so sure there is one bit of a difference.

Uphill climbs in both places.

I like Stonebraker a lot good coach & person. He did some good things & had a couple of successful seasons @ Garrard Co before moving onto a college assistant coaching job for a few years. I tried to hire him when he was returning to the high school ranks but was outvoted & it ended up as a disaster. He was in a tough spot @ Woodford Co. & the 16-34 regular season record shows that. I think that the previous coach saw the writing on the wall & that was why he entertained leaving in the first place before Stonebraker was hired @ Woodford Co.

Good luck to him @ J-town

Good Luck Steve. They got a quality man in this hire.

I agree Johnny.

Many people also don't realize that his first head coaching gig was at Casey County, and if not mistaken, he took over when they were on a 30-40 something game losing streak. His 2nd and last year at Casey, in 2000, they went 6-5. Then he took the Garrard job in 01.

I totally forgot about his time @ Casey Co. Thanks Harry!

Not a problem! A little blast from the past.

The fact that he won 6 games at Casey County at any point in their programs history says a lot; the fact that they were able to win 6 games THEN...says all I need to know.

All too often, people get caught up in records in regards to high school football coaches. In some states, go for it (then, again..I'm not so sure that even works. Art Briles went 4-18 at a HS in Texas once upon a time. Rick Darlington is winning 8A Titles at Apopka HS in FLA like it's his hobby was more or less fired from the winningest program in the country, Valdosta HS in GA for not winning). So many factors that high school coaches can't control.

Kevin Wallace had a 20 game below .500 record w/ only one winning season in his time as the HC at Warren East.

Sam Harp won who knows how many state titles at Danville, and he has only won 2 games the last two years at Lebanon HS in TN, including a an O'fer season this past year.

Johnny Hines at Pulaski County had FIVE seasons of either 2-3 wins in his first 11 years as the HC at Pulaski County. So, almost half of his first decade were 2 and 3 win seasons. People think he all of the sudden had a period where he forgot how to coach? Heck no.

I (as I'm sure you could as well) list a slew of other dang good coaches who have had some rough patches. And, several years of them at that.

I've usually just gone by this rule of thumb: If you're a head coach that has won, at all, especialy at places that aren't exactly considered football mecca's, then you can probably hold your own to say the least. And, then there are some, who haven't and walked into flat out, crappy situations.
