Steve Stonebraker, the Head Coach at Woodford County High this past year, was named the new Head Football Coach at Jeffersontown High School early this week. This leaves the job at Woodford County open, which in all honesty could be a sleeping giant with the talent it has ergo Drake Jackson.

 

I can't let this sleeping giant comment go. You are either uninformed or just being dishonest and it makes Stoney look bad and will make whomever they hire look bad. Woodford is just asleep. Not a sleeping giant.

The fact that he won 6 games at Casey County at any point in their programs history says a lot; the fact that they were able to win 6 games THEN...says all I need to know.

 

All too often, people get caught up in records in regards to high school football coaches. In some states, go for it (then, again..I'm not so sure that even works. Art Briles went 4-18 at a HS in Texas once upon a time. Rick Darlington is winning 8A Titles at Apopka HS in FLA like it's his hobby was more or less fired from the winningest program in the country, Valdosta HS in GA for not winning). So many factors that high school coaches can't control.

 

Kevin Wallace had a 20 game below .500 record w/ only one winning season in his time as the HC at Warren East.

 

Sam Harp won who knows how many state titles at Danville, and he has only won 2 games the last two years at Lebanon HS in TN, including a an O'fer season this past year.

 

Johnny Hines at Pulaski County had FIVE seasons of either 2-3 wins in his first 11 years as the HC at Pulaski County. So, almost half of his first decade were 2 and 3 win seasons. People think he all of the sudden had a period where he forgot how to coach? Heck no.

 

I (as I'm sure you could as well) list a slew of other dang good coaches who have had some rough patches. And, several years of them at that.

 

I've usually just gone by this rule of thumb: If you're a head coach that has won, at all, especialy at places that aren't exactly considered football mecca's, then you can probably hold your own to say the least. And, then there are some, who haven't and walked into flat out, crappy situations.

 

Hillard Howard of Pikeville fame is one that quickly comes to mind when he started the Letcher Co Central football program. Pretty sure the went winless his first year. Coach Howard wasn't used to that kind of a season.

EXCELLENT POST. You are right Harry if you take over Trinity then you should win but if you take over a school that was crappy and you win 6 games IMO that is like winning the state title at some of these powerhouses. Everybody cant and wont win state championships so if a guy can win at schools that haven't really won much then you have to look at what he has done at that program. Hey if you win 7 games at UK you are the greatest and you get a big bonus and a new contract you do that at Alabama they help you move so they can get you out of town as fast as possible. I think (and with your post maybe people will think about it) people really need to look at the situation that coaches are in and stop thinking that every school can win state titles because they cant. Really and truly if you think about it Beatty wins state title at Trinity and less just say Joe wins 9 games at a program that has won 7 games combined the previous 3 years, who really should be the state coach of the year. Hey look at the guy that took Wayne Co. to the state title a couple of years ago if he wasn't he should have been overall state coach of the year. Not taking anything away from Shawn, but wasn't that the year Monticello merged with Wayne. I realize Monticello didn't have a football program, but I'm sure Coach Thompson isn't complaining about an increase in athlete population. I do agree with the basis of your post.

Ease off the trigger big guy. Read my post one more time after you count to ten. Again, I agree with you, but to insinuate the merger has not had a positive impact on Coach Thompson's football program is ridiculous. I'm sure he would tell you the same thing.

One would think..but, I'd be willing to bet he would tell you the opposite.

 

The only thing Monticello (who didn't have a football team) did was up their boys population (in a negative way) & brought soccer to Wayne County (2013 was their first year for having it and solely because of Monticello).

 

They might have gotten a few kids on the team, but nobody with any impact. Future? Maybe. But the kids on that 2013 team were all of the same ones from the couple years before.

Stoney/Woodford/J-town turned into the pros and cons of the Wayne County/Monticello merger. Gotta love it.
