I would add Coach Mark Starns to list as one as the best coaches. In his 1st at Johnson Central he takes Johnson Central to the State tournament. Of the 5 teams that have gone to the State from Johnson Central this team was probably the least talented but Starns got them there and that's what counts bottom line. Starns has the pedigree as well, served under his father Tommy Starns, at Lexington Catholic. Starns has previous State tournament experience once with his father in 1985, three years with Kelly Wells at Mason County, state champioship with Mason and a state runner-up. Served on Rick Pitino staff with Boston Celtics. That is pretty good company! Starns has the potential turn Johnson Central into a powerhouse basketball program. There is enough talented boys in the hall ways that Starns could have used this year as well, that needed to come out. Starns could have run his system better with a few more of those boy's. I'm excited that we have a coach the caliber of Coach Starns. Start the dynasty at Johnson Central! We have been waiting for this for many years here in Johnson County.

Stole my thunder. I like Coach Reitz, but the Campbell program is not where is should be with the kids who have just gone through. However, they had a great JV season and a great freshman season this year, so we shall see what he can do with them.

With so many high schools in Campbell Co (8 I think), it's hard to get all the talent in one building. And as for the facilities at Campbell Co.... how can you build such and awesome looking school and put a gym in that is smaller than the one you came from? Doesn't make sense to me.

Any list like this should start with Tim Reilly from Warren Central. The man's teams have owned the 4th region the past few years and have faired very well down state, including a state championship.

Lots of great high school coaches in the state of Kentucky. Many great coaches at "high profile" schools, and many are lesser known talents who coach at small schools throughout the state. It is great watching the clashes of basketball strategies and ideology across the state.

You're certainly right about the stout competition in the tenth the last several years, but I don't think Mason and PC prevented Campbell from doing much but maybe winning the region?? Can't buy the too many high schools arguement either?? Kenton County has 15 high schools, none as large as Campbell, but consistantly produces several superior teams to Campbell's. They also haven't fared well to many of the much smaller neighboring schools like NCC, Highlands, Brossart, etc. Looking at their last several teams, it doesn't appear that they are doing a very good job of developing their talent; especially at the lower (JV, Frosh) levels. A 10-15 record against an average schedule with this year's seniors and supporting cast, in the year they've been pointing towards for several years; isn't a very outstanding coaching job worthy of mention as one of the best in the state!!

 

Campbell frequently seems to have very good freshman, and middle school teams; but it doesn't seem to translate into quality varsity squads like maybe it should?? Some might argue that locally possibly only Ryle seems to "do less with more" than Campbell year in, year out!!

You may be right about Campbell Co., but you have to look at the success Reitz has had at his previous stops in the 10th region: MMI (powerhouse in the early 80's), Maysville (tons of success there), Harrison Co. (3 regional titles).

Maybe his coaching style is just too "old school" for all the "players" today... :lol:

I don't think they get much help in the lower, especially JV, ranks; and he seemed confused on whether to play the younger kids or the seniors at times this year. The development of their junior class has been a big disappointment as well!! The soph and freshmen classes have some talent--AGAIN!!

Rietz hasn't had a very deep team. It seems like every year CCHS only has 5 guys that are expirienced. They only have 2 seniors next year. Do they have any players that will step up to the next level decides the other 3 sophmores that played varsity this year?

In a school of 350 students??? I think he is in the top 3 or 4 in the 13,14,15,16th regions and top 25 in the state. Hard to argue with numbers. I would like to see what he could do over time in a school with 700 to 1200 students to choose from.
