Projecting Jameis Winston at the NFL Level

Featured Replies

RGIII and any mobile QB does not typically translate well to the NFL if that was an overriding factor in their success in college. You can be a pocket passer that also happens to have some mobility (think Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, etc.), but you had better be strong in the pocket. Guys like RGIII and Manziel, without their running, they are nothing. They are not guys who can sit in the pocket, read a D, and pick it apart. In college, when a team had to respect their running ability, that created additional openings that they could take advantage of with passing. In the NFL, that may work for a bit, but eventually, their body falls apart. RGIII was outstanding his rookie year. Then he was injured into oblivion and now look at him. Someone mentioned Vince Young and that is 100% the same thing as the other guys.

Talent wise, his skill set translates to the NFL very well.

NFL size, pocket passer, canon arm, and mobile enough to run when he has to. Plays in a pro set as opposed to one of the gymicky offenses.

His wonderlic score is going to mean a lot.

If it's me and I'm taking a QB, I'll take him over Mariota. I think Mariota is a system QB, much like Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Sanchez, etc.

I agree. Oregon blew out FSU but I thought his feet hurt more than his arm. He didn't have to make any tough throws and if not for defensive backs dropping the ball he'd have had 3 ints instead of 1.

Just reminds me of VY... Big kid that can move and has a big arm, but has questionable maturity level.

He can't move at all. Jameis is way more of a traditional pocket passer than VY ever was. Winston rarely ran and when he did it looked awkward as hell. Winston is not what I would call a mobile QB. His legs were the last resort. Gratefully so.

I still see more of a comparison as it pertains to maturity and I stand by that comparison. If he will study film and put in the work like VY did not, he can be successful. If not, he won't.

He's not as mobile as VY, but more mobile than a Brady for example.

His biggest hurdle is maturity and work ethic..as was Vince's.

^One of the main things that did Vince Young in was his atrocious mechanics. Jameis doesn't have that issue IMO.

There are offensive lineman more mobile than Brady. The only person Brady is more mobile than is Peyton Manning. Tom Brady makes Kyle Wiltjer look like Usain Bolt.

I've never heard his work ethic be questioned. You're talking about a dude who is playing and excelling at two sports in Division I athletics. That takes some dedication any way you slice it.

His maturity on the other hand.....

I didn't want to hijack the Jameis Winston to stay at FSU Thread.

If Jameis goes Pro, how does his talent and skill set project at the next level?

Is Jameis as highly regarded coming out of college (if he leaves) as RGIII was?

RGIII was a "Can't Miss" talent as thought by many (Cats Cats Cats), is Jameis a "Can't Miss" as well?

How much can we contribute RG3's struggles to his injury though? Seems he was doing rather well before that.

Ehh, it was his first year. Just like with Michael Vick, teams will eventually scheme to stop the running aspect of the mobile QB. In order to be successful in the NFL, the QB has to be capable of staying in the pocket and making the reads and the throws. Vick couldn't do it. Neither could Young, or RG3. Winston seems much more capable than those 3.

I don't really follow that division but for some reason I was thinking that even after the injury he's been decent, just no where near performing compared to where he was drafted.

I think hes going to be great, probably win 17 super bowls in his 12 year NFL career.

I think he'll do well. I hope he surrounds himself with people who can offer him sound guidance to eliminate the off field distractions. He has a lot of moxie on the field and the physical talents to have success. Maybe a Dan Marino type event happens and the Bengals get him at 21. :D

Playing QB at the NFL level is incredibly challenging from an intellectual standpoint. Let's be real. Winston is not the brightest bulb... that would be my biggest hesitation.

They rave about his football IQ but I am intrigued to see how he does on the Wonderlic and in his interviews.

I've always been under the impression that he has a ton of football smarts. I really haven't heard anything that would make me question his intelligence. Making poor off the field decisions doesn't necessarily mean he's not smart.

Jameis will go out and party with Johnny Manzeil the night before his first NFL start and get arrested for raping a woman in the bathroom at a bar.
