Inside the 10th Region (1-5-15)

Pendleton's solid weekend

Of the five 10th Region teams to play a pair of games Friday and Saturday, Keaton Belcher's Pendleton County Wildcats may have been the most pleasant surprise. Despite losing their #2 scorer (12.2 ppg) and #2 rebounder (3.5 rpg) in 8th grader Dontaie Allen, who is likely out for the season, the Cats not only won 2 games, but won them in convincing fashion. On Friday, Pendleton controlled visiting Bracken County from start to finish in a 65-46 win--avenging a 1-point loss in Brooksville from two weeks prior. The back court tandem of Hunter Wood (23 points) and Michael Antrobus (19 points) led the way. Wood's play was also huge on the defensive end, as the junior guard helped the Cats hold Polar Bears standout Austin Crawford to just 5 points. On Saturday, the Wildcats participated in Cooper's New Years Classic, where they upended Covington Holy Cross 54-43. Antrobus was a key cog again, leading PC with 24 points, including 10-11 FT shooting. Junior guard Tanner Daugherty added 12 points, hitting 3 of 4 attempts from beyond the arc. And senior big man Hunter Lea contributed 11 points & 10 rebounds.

Augusta bounces back with 2 wins; Maddox reaches 1,000 points

The Panthers struggled in both of their Christmas tournament appearances, but rebounded last weekend with a couple of home wins. Augusta handled St. Patrick 71-52 on Friday night, getting 23 points & 6 rebounds from Camryn Snapp, 22 points from Connor Maddox, & 11 points from Owens Crawford. Saturday saw Jason Hinson's club turn back Ludlow 66-55, but it was a career day for Maddox, who not only scored a career-high 33 points in the victory, but the junior guard also reached the 1,000 points milestone for his career. Snapp and Crawford scored 19 & 10 respectively.

Mason County cruises in 2 wins

The Royals had no problems in either of their weekend wins. On Friday Mason County pounded 16th Region foe East Carter 87-52. Six players on Chris O'Hearn's roster notched double figures, led by senior forward Dorian Henry's 16 points and Dee Johnson's 12. Jake O'Mara, Antwavon Williams, Ryan Johnson, & Amani Thomas each scored 10 points. On Saturday Mason traveled across the river to battle Western Brown (OH) and came away with a 69-54 triumph. Henry's 18 points paced the victors, while Johnson scored 14 and Williams finished with 11 points & 12 assists.

GRC, Scott successful in Marvin Meredith Classic

George Rogers Clark had arguably the most impressive win of the week, as the Cardinals pummeled 15th Region power Lawrence County 72-52 in Russell's Marvin Meredith Classic. Junior guard Jyles Anderson scored a team-high 21 points, while Damion King added 16 and James Cornelius put in 11. The Bulldogs' 52 points was nearly 34 shy of the 85.8 ppg the team was averaging before this contest.

GRC wasn't the only 10th Region squad in action on Saturday. Brad Carr's Scott Eagles put up 28 3rd quarter points in a 66-52 victory over Greenup County. The win was the 6th in 7 games for the Eagles, who will have a rematch with Holmes on Tuesday night at home.

Camels edge Mustangs in annual rivalry game

Playing without senior stud Dre Jackson, Campbell County overcame a 25-22 halftime deficit and turned back a Bishop Brossart upset bid, winning 52-50 in what is arguably the 10th's most heated rivalry. Junior guard Trent McGovney picked up the slack in Jackson's absence, scoring a team-high 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. The Stangs, who were also playing without Blake Saunders, were led by senior forward Jonathan Zink's game-high 17 points.

Paris outlasts Bourbon County

Playing their 7th consecutive home game, Terence Brooks' Paris squad won its 9th game out of 10 in defeating county rival Bourbon County 67-57 on Saturday. The Hounds led 38-36 at the break, but were finally able to create some space between themselves and the Colonels. Junior forward Koebe Garrard led Paris with 21 points. Jekobi Wells scored 14 and Wan Dumphord added 12. Landon Sexton paced the visitors with 20 points.

Other weekend tidbits

* St. Patrick played twice last weekend, falling 71-52 to Augusta, as mentioned above. The Saints broke their 6-game losing streak on Saturday, beating Calvary Christian 74-33. Andrew Sticklen led with 16 points & 17 rebounds. Freshman forward Ben Swolsky also had a nice outing, finishing with 16 points & 10 rebounds. The Cougars, in their only game of the weekend, were led by senior center Zac Valandra's 13 points & 6 rebounds.

* Nicholas County trailed Williamstown by 7 points after 3 quarters on Saturday, but the Jackets dominated the 4th, outscoring the Demons 32-20 en route to an 82-77 road win. Five Jackets hit double figures, led by Ben Duncan's 20 points & Devin Trussell's 15 points. It was the third consecutive win for Roger Newton's team.

* Robertson County entered Saturday's home contest with Rose Hill losers of 5 of their last 6 games. The Black Devils were able to get back on the winning track with a dominating 80-44 victory over the Royals.

* Harrison County also took part in the Cooper New Years Classic. The Breds took on the host Jaguars and fell 72-60, despite a career performance from Trenton Thompson. The senior forward finished with 43 points & 11 rebounds, shooting 16-26 from the floor, 2-5 from the 3-point line, & 9-12 from the charity stripe. If my records are accurate, Thompson is the third 10th Region player this year to eclipse the 40 point mark in a game, joining a pair of sophomores: Jake Ohmer of Scott & Austin Crawford of Bracken County.

* Speaking of Bracken County, it was a rough weekend for the Polar Bears. Not only did the team lose by 19 at Pendleton County on Friday night, but head coach Jeremy Miles was also ejected in the game's final minute, meaning he will be forced to sit out Saturday's Class "A" opener against Paris. The Bears also participated in the Cooper New Years Classic on Saturday afternoon, falling to St. Henry 77-52 after being down just 40-34 at intermission. Austin Crawford's 23 points & 11 rebounds led BC in defeat.

* After winning 4 straight games leading up to Christmas, the Silver Grove Big Trains have now dropped 3 of their last 4. The latest loss for Howard Brownstein's team was its most lopsided of the season, a 50-point defeat (67-17) at the hands of Walton-Verona on Saturday.

* Montgomery County did not play this past weekend. The 5-6 Indians will be back in action on Tuesday when Franklin County comes to Mt. Sterling.

At the same time, 56.5 miles to the South (hat-tip to Google Maps), #3 George Rogers Clark will visit #4 Paris in a showdown with huge 40th District seeding implications.

Yep.

Nice write-up from a kid in 3rd grade. :lol2: :thumb:

Mad skills for a slug-laying, meatloaf-hating, zeppelin-playing seven year old, for sure.

This^^

Great work as always! I am just hoping that PC and HC don't meet until the championship. Coach Belcher really has that team playing inspired ball, the future is bright in Falmouth.

Coach of the Year so far?

Coach of the Year so far?

So far, I think it's Brooks at #1 & then Belcher at #2.

Can't argue that.

Coach of the Year so far?

To me it would have to be Ohearn, has Mason in the top spot right now with the only loss being a 2pt defeat to the top team in the 12th. Close second would be Humphrey and GRC. Henry has more than proved he is a top player in the region thus far.

Well done, Randy!
