December 28, 201411 yr You can't make money off albums anymore, the only way artists make any money now a days is live performances. Ticket prices for concerts are starting to get higher and higher cause of this.

First, the label takes their cut, and also pays for marketing, promotion, etc. Then you've got producers, studio costs, distributors and retailers who all get a piece. When you add everything up, thre isn't a ton left for the artists. When I used to work in the industry, it was widely known that artists made right around .50 per album, and that was before taxes. Sure it's good money if you sell a million records, but it's nowhere close to the crazy money you'd think it is. It's always been about touring.
December 28, 201411 yr Regardless of the amount an artist makes, I feel strongly that writers and performers own the material and have a right to profit from its use. It shouldn't matter how much money someone already has, whether we feel for them or not. The fact is that this is their livelihood. They should be able to choose whether they want it distributed for no charge, minimal charget or not at all.
December 28, 201411 yr Pandora is no different than a radio station. Not the profit generator for artists. They make fractions of a penny when it is played.

Ticket prices for concerts are starting to get higher and higher cause of this. Very true. This has never changed. Artists have never made a lot of money off of albums, the record companies made the money. The only way artists made money for decades was concerts.

The problem they run into if they refuse to have their songs aired unless they are paid is the song doesn't get heard which leads to less publicity and less money made at concerts etc. Pharrell has made millions for his song being aired on the radio and pandora etc. not from the radio stations etc. but from the publicity made and the following he has gained.
