December 26, 201411 yr Like I have said in many threads on this subject as soon as the protesters break the law they need to be arrested. And I'm fine with that. They should not open fire into the crowd when bottles are thrown. That should be a last resort for when they are fired on, cannot withdraw or are trying to save someone's life.

I'd rather my police not retreat and let criminals run wild.

I think most cases the police have shown great restraint with protests/riots. But I've heard people complain about the use of tear gas. I just don't understand what people expect the police to do when idiots are breaking the law.

No, the only problem I've had with tear gas was when it was launched and some journalists that were not in the midst of protesters. If the police need to use tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, etc for their safety or the safety of others I have no problem with that. I know that those non-lethal weapons can kill sometimes as well but that is not the normal outcome of their use and the protesters should be responsible for putting themselves at that level of risk when they break the law.
December 26, 201411 yr So if they aren't being fired upon they should just retreat? I'd rather my police not retreat and let criminals run wild. I would rather them not either but I just don't think opening fire into a crowd of people and potentially killing hundreds including children should ever happen unless the police officers lives or other civilians lives are in imminent danger and they cannot get out of there. How do view the Kent State shootings? Don't you think it would have been better if the National Guard had backed down?

How do view the Kent State shootings? Don't you think it would have been better if the National Guard had backed down? I didn't say they should open fire in a crowd. If they are facing a non shooting threat (e.g. bottles being thrown) use tear gas, rubber bullets, or something else. They should not just retreat. As for the Kent State shootings, I wasn't even remotely thought of being brought into this world at that time and haven't researched it so it'd be foolish to offer a statement on that event.

I'm fine with that too--as I said before. However, what if those methods are ineffective and the crowd still won't disburse but the police still haven't been fired on?

December 26, 201411 yr So if you read his responses I think you have your answer as to exactly what he meant... Ok. He's entitled to his opinion...and he cleared it up. What do you want...a prize?
December 26, 201411 yr Bottles thrown by protestors against police in riot gear is not lethal force. Thankfully the police confronted with this situation recently have better sense than you. What about bricks thrown at police without riot gear?
December 26, 201411 yr Ok. He's entitled to his opinion...and he cleared it up. What do you want...a prize? No, but since I was attacked for having the position that I had you could acknowledge that I had a valid reason for getting that way. I assume that you are not in favor of opening fire on unarmed protesters that are throwing bottles at riot police?
December 26, 201411 yr What about bricks thrown at police without riot gear? Totally different situation, isn't it? They should use whatever level of force needed to defend themselves or civilians in the area. I've yet to see unequipped police officers face off with organized protesters. Not saying it hasn't happened but I haven't seen it.

Unequipped officers were targeted with bottles and bricks early on in Ferguson. Hopefully no officers have to go out there without proper equipment now... The ones who were equipped probably got most of their equipment from the military surplus.

You do realize officers are allowed to use whatever force is necessary to ensure the public safety first and theirs second. I'm not advocating firing into a crowd unless they are using methods that are possibly lethal. This would include throwing bricks, hammers, Molotov Cocktails, etc. Then, they need to be very sure of who they are shooting.
