December 28, 201411 yr Why would you have to move Billy out of CF? Having Gomez play LF would give you one of the top defensive OFs in baseball without question and solve your LF need. Because Gomez is a better CFer.
December 28, 201411 yr Author Really think the Reds do this kind of a deal? It was just mentioned as a possibility on the MLB Network. I don't think anything has actually transpired.
December 28, 201411 yr Because Gomez is a better CFer. Based on what? Billy Hamilton 2 errors and 10 assists versus Carlos Gomez 5 errors and 7 assists on nearly the same number of chances. Billy was 1 of 3 nominated for gold glove last year and Gomez wasn't. How Billy didn't get the gold glove over Juan Legares is a joke. Legares had 50 fewer chances and had 5 errors and 6 assists. Is it Billy's fault he plays in a crackerbox? He can track in a bigger park as well as Legares and Gomez. Edited December 28, 201411 yr by EZ Living
December 28, 201411 yr Cozart sucks. Won't dispute that his offense was terrible last year but his glove was more than sufficient. Like I said if he could hit .250 you could live with it. Moving Billy Hamilton to SS doesn't improve your team if you still have a hole in LF.

Once word gets around that you've got a hose people quit running on you. Legares had 15 assists as a rookie. That is likely what happened with him. Also he had a better range factor and had a 3.4 defensive WAR vs Hamilton's 1.8 defensive WAR. The metrics do not support your argument.
December 28, 201411 yr Unless Gomez makes them a contender next year you get young players that are cheap and under team control for a while.

I'm not disagreeing with you but that was Hamilton's first full year playing CF. He will get better.

UZR is probably a lot better rating than WAR for defense but we all know who votes and how much subjectivity there is by the voters. Say what you want they always seem to factor offense into their decision otherwise Phillips wouldn't have lost the awards he has in the past so I won't get into a discussion on WAR and Sabermetrics. There are probably a lot of managers that don't take the time or effort to properly evaluate the players before voting. They liked Legares 14 assists in 2013 so he became their favorite. Same with people's thoughts on Gomez, because he robbed Red's hitters on home runs on Fox televised games he is better than Hamilton, lol.
December 28, 201411 yr Unless Gomez makes them a contender next year you get young players that are cheap and under team control for a while. Gomez is only 29 and under control until 2017 for $8m 2015 and 9$ 2016. If certain Reds bounce back and younger guys don't digress you don't think he could help this team contend?

There aren't any stats defensively that can measure that. And if they do, they are as subjective as the person entering the data. I'm no knocking Billy, I think Gomez is better in CF. And I have no idea if he can play SS at an adequate level. My point is that if he can, we can end the Cozart black hole in the lineup, ala Hanigan.

If you want to use UZR Lagares put up a 25.3 UZR/150 while Hamilton put up a 21.7 UZR/150. Hamilton had a nice defensive year for a rookie. He didn't deserve the gold glove.

They lay out the field in zones and then somehow measure how players get to balls in those zones. These numbers can also be park-adjusted.

I guess we can agree to disagree and I guess we'll see as time goes on with Hamilton versus the other 2 guys. They do claim that to get an accurate read with UZR you need to have 3 years of data to get a good read on a player's defensive abilities. I'd love to see him play more games in bigger parks because he can flat outrun the ball and as HT said he should get better with experience. One year in the OF is not a lot of experience to judge him on. I guess to even be in the top 3 candidates last year for gold glove is special.
