I think you know that I have tons of faith in the Dawgs by things I've said in this thread.

 

In one of my posts I was exploring how they might've come out uninspired for a Saturday afternoon game, and propped Beetle in doing so by saying that he always comes to play (which he does).

 

I hope you understand that this was not a knock on the remaining contributors, and merely suggesting why it could've been in this one game that they weren't initially pumped.

 

You had said that St. Henry came out with more intensity, so that's why I started pondering what might've kept the Bulldogs from being charged up.

I'm feelin' that after getting some of the football cobwebs out Dixie will start making statements worthy of putting themselves in the discussion. I agree too that Cooper could easily be right there with them, but NewCath, CovCath, and Holmes are presently worthy of the top of the pack ranking.

Holmes will have a very nice team this year but the last two years they were a legitimate threat to win the state title and could compete with anyone in the state. This year I just dont see the inside game they have had in the past not only from the rebounding and offensive production but on the defensive end. Bolden will have to be lights out when they play top 10 - 15 competition. But they will still be fun to watch and will have a good year.

very impressed with commodore in the JV game, he is very mature and fundamental for his age. Also the big guy #11 looks like he could get more varsity time as the year progresses, he and Avery would give Holmes some nice size down low. Daniels was also a very nice guard that I had never heard of and Englemon was a lights out shooter. There was also a second englemon that looked good at the end of the JV game. I also couldn't tell but it sounded like the announcer kept saying bolden in the JV game, that kid looked like he had the potential to become a very big boy, he had some huge legs and a body to grow into. Do you have a full official roster Walter?

Also as far as varsity goes bolden, Mullins and McClendon have to be one of the better guard trios in the state. Size will hurt Holmes but they have guards that can hang with anyone. Very impressed with boldens unselfishness this season, right now it may be hurting them but it will be key as the year goes long as its allowing other guys to get confidence. Holmes also struggled to figure out the zone but attacked it in the second half and looked like a different team.

I've said since the summer that how good Holmes will be this year will depend on how well they defend, CONSISTENTLY. Outside of the 2nd half against Henry Clay, they have actually defended pretty well this year.

 

They are going to see a lot of zone this year and right now they are figuring out how to play against it. Not enough movement or penetration for open shots. i can almost guarantee that is a point of emphasis this week in practice....zone offense.

 

Their interior defense is definitely a concern. Avery is very athletic but lacks the strength that Englemon, Hill, and Chames had. Andrew Arnold at 6'2 200 lbs will have to be a contributor and he has played significant minutes over the last two games. Kunstek had a pretty solid game against Holmes, but being able to put Arnold's strength on him helped.

 

And something I haven't seen yet so far is Holmes hasn't shot well from outside so far. Bolden alone is 8 for 35 through the first 4 games...not too often that you'll see him go through a slump like that. McClendon is 4 for 18 and Mullins 2 for 13.

 

When shots start falling for those three, you will see an improvement in the offense.

 

Bottom line is as bad as some of you think they've played, they are still sitting at 3-1. They're more worried about W's than style points.

Freshman Commodore and sophomore Jaiden Greene (#11) are both going to be really good and have seen regular varsity minutes so far. Greene is very active on the boards and is pretty strong for his age. Tries to tear the rim off any time he goes to the rim.

 

Daniels is a junior. Quick and active hands.

 

Englemon is a pretty good shooter but will need to get better defensively to see regular varsity minutes. He played the first half against ST H but didn't play the 2nd half with McClendon staying out of foul trouble.

 

I think the other big kid you're talking about is #22, a sophomore, Xavian Bolden...Beetle's cousin. Good size at 6'4 and all he wants to do is rebound and defend. Chris Englemon mentality. They have another Englemon, Mike Englemon.
