Completely agree with your statement about situational awareness. Nothing worse than the official that wants to make the big call or all the calls. Screams "Look at me!". They are out there and it's frustrating. Just call the game to the best of your ability but have some sort of clue.

I guess it comes down to that you are responsible for your sideline, and who is on your sideline. I agree it's a total crap call to make, but that would be my guess for applying the rule.

That plus the TD being called back. Was it a dead ball penalty back then? Should the TD have counted?

It sounds to me like the flag may have been legitimate but the administration of the penalty is what the officials screwed up. I'm sure the Douglass coach would have been okay with the penalty had it been correctly administered on the extra point or kickoff and the play stood. As an official, you must know the rules. You would think that officials that are assigned playoff games are the best of the bunch.

I admit I don't know the exact rule. Does the rule say a team's players and coaches have to just be off the field or off it by some distance, say a yard or two? Any officials out there know? If it just says you have to be off the field of play, look at the tape and go to the 1:45 time or so. Tell me where a player or coach violated the rule (except the guy wearing all black) who was behind the official - no way the official saw him.

 

I sure hope nothing like this happens Friday or Saturday in BG...this was REALLY BAD...should not have been called and they obviously screwed up the administering of it...

I believe all players and coaches have to be back 3 feet.

If that is the case, you could probably call the sideline infraction on 75% of TD's scored by all teams...

Obviously, the Get Back coach failed in his duties.

It is my understanding that this is exactly what happened to Murray Friday night except there was more game time left. Also I do not know if the rule is the same here but I assume both are using Fed rules so they would be the same most likely

Is there anything in football like the "played under protest" rule in baseball? If a HC in baseball wants to protest application of a rule (not a judgment call), they need to do so before the ball is put in play again and there are some formal things that go along with it. I know there is an expense to the school for processing the "protest," so there is some minor disincentive to doing it all the time.

 

My recollection was that a protest was actually upheld in MLB this year and the game replayed. Had something to do with field conditions and maybe involved CLE? Obviously, the George Brett pine tar incident was the most famous example. I recall a story that when they resumed the game Billy Martin challenged that Brett missed 1 or more of the bases on his HR trot. Different umpiring crew working the resumed game, but they were ahead of Billy and had a notarized statement from the prior crew that he touched all of the bases!!!

 

I say pick up the game from where the misapplication was made.
