Russian ruble tumbles

Featured Replies

With the help of international sanctions and falling oil prices, the Russian ruble is falling hard.

Last week the ruble fell 11% for the week, the biggest weekly fall since Russia's 1998 default.

From the end of 2009 until this past January $1 would get you between 30 and 32 rubles. Around February of this year it started to fall slightly, But since July it's been falling hard, and as of today $1 will get you 52 rubles.

Will Russia's economy collapse and default again?

What are the pros/cons for the US of it collapsing? Does it force Putin into a more "war like" mode to keep focus off the collapsing economy and give Russia a common enemy?

Whether it helps or not, that's what he'll do. He's got those people whipped into a frenzy with a deceptive state-controlled media and his grip on power is now utterly dependent on an external enemy to deflect from problems at home (which are largely of his own making).

I guess one pro would be the price of Vodka should start going down for those of you who drink it.

That was a joke for those who took it too seriously.

In Russia's Psuedo Democracy (can it even be called that?), when it Putin's term over? Seems like his second stint as Pres has been going for a while.

2018, and he is talking about possibly running then, if he wins then he will be in power until 2024.

If their economy collapses hopefully they will blame Putin and he'll leave office. One of the reasons he wants control of Ukraine is that he needs them for his economic zone, which won't work without Ukraine. He is also worried that a western Ukraine will have great success, and that then Russians won't be able to deny what is actually holding them back, which is Putin and the rest of his buddies in power.

Sad thing is that Putin's approval rating had been plummeting until the Ukraine crisis. I am almost wondering if the while thing with Viktor Yanukovych was concocted by Putin to begin with.

Encourage his crony to back out of a deal with the EU that was popular with Western Ukraine. Subtly send in agents to help stoke the already burning fires of discontent. Let the uprising occur, blame it on western "fascists" and encourage outright rebellion by the people in Eastern Ukraine with help from Russia.

Suddenly Putin is more popular than ever and his hold on power has never been more secure. Sounds like a scenario concocted by the KGB to me. Sad thing is with the gutting of the Russian military after the fall of the Soviet Union there is no other faction with the power and clout to resist the successor to the KGB(which is scarier because the military really helped to keep the KGB in check during the Soviet era).

It is amazing how almost an entire country can be duped by false information disseminated by the media. :lol2:

I wasn't aware that there was any such thing as "value" left in the ruble.

Or lack thereof. And now we know why North Korea is such a joke.

The OPEC decision to not drop production last week was a major kick in the groin to the Russian economy. High oil prices have carried their country for the last several years.

Exactly. That's a monster blow to the Russkie oil oligarchs, who have a ridiculous amount of influence upon Putin and the Russian government.

The petro-dollar trumps Russian oil production. As long and the Russians trade oil in Federal Reserve Dollars like the rest of the world (except Iran) we will be at peace. If the Russians were to go off the petro-dollar as the currency for trading oil....well, the last two guys that did that (other than Iran) were named Hussein and Gaddafi.

They are trying to with BRICS, I don't know how successful they will be.
