November 30, 201411 yr It appears that UAB has fired its A.D. and is dropping football for the time being.
November 30, 201411 yr I can remember when they first getting started and pounded Dayton. Sad to see this occurring.
November 30, 201411 yr Apparently all goes back to a disagreement between former basketball coach Gene Bartow (now deceased) and Bear Bryant's son who is on the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. Bryant has apparently hated the UAB program since then, has worked to limit funding, and Alabama has refused to schedule UAB (which would have given them a cash infusion). Not a good look from the state of Alabama.

Not a good look from the state of Alabama. I remember a couple months ago when a letter from a bunch of UAB boosters to the Alabama trustees that accused them of deliberately sabotaging the program. Sounds like UAB's program was already living on borrowed time and that things were set up against them for a long time.

If all this is true, I hope Bryant's son is proud to have helped run a program down...like UAB could ever threaten Bama in football. Real big of him.
December 1, 201411 yr Sad, I had heard about their problems they wanted to sell bonds to build a new stadium and they board shot it down. Their current stadium is by far worst I've ever seen, worse than old cardinal stadium.

Not a good look from the state of Alabama. In 2006 Bryant's son squashed the UAB hire of Jimbo Fisher as head coach for no other reason than to keep the program down. Strange situation where Bama and UAB are both run by the same Board of Trustees, and to the surprise of no one it is a ridiculously one sided situation...

If so, this is a disaster.
December 1, 201411 yr They are ran by the same board of trustees? If so, this is a disaster. Yes. Alabama, Alabama Birmingham and Alabama Huntsville are all run by the same BoT...
December 1, 201411 yr Author Yes. Alabama, Alabama Birmingham and Alabama Huntsville are all run by the same BoT... Hmm.. I can see this happening with some small state affiliated schools, but UAB isnt small.
December 1, 201411 yr Hmm.. I can see this happening with some small state affiliated schools, but UAB isnt small. They are small in the eyes of the Board. Remember, too, UAB wasn't opened until 1969 (it was a combination of medical school and community college from the mid-30s to 1969). While they have lots of students they don't have the clout of Alabama-Tuscaloosa which was opened in 1831.
December 1, 201411 yr Here is a link to an article from a few weeks back that gives more of the back story of the dislike between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Is the Alabama board of trustees finally ready to kill UAB football? - CBSSports.com

It seems like if there is an issue like this, they should break off and become their own entity. They certainly have the enrollment to do so.

They certainly have the enrollment to do so. Being run by the state I'm not sure if they can. And if they went private they'd lose all the funding, which would certainly kill their enrollment. They are sort of caught between a rock and hard place.
