UAB to drop football

Featured Replies

I understand that.. That said UAB is a pretty good size school these days. It seems like if there is an issue like this, they should break off and become their own entity. They certainly have the enrollment to do so.

The same BoT placed the state medical school in Birmingham, and it is the backbone of the university. Pull out from the stste system, lose the medical school and shut the doors shortly thereafter...

Being run by the state I'm not sure if they can. And if they went private they'd lose all the funding, which would certainly kill their enrollment. They are sort of caught between a rock and hard place.

Sure they can. They may lose some funding, but I doubt it would be a lot. The Community College here in Ashland broke off from UK years ago. It's still going strong and actually has a higher enrollment than it ever had.

That would definetly change things. Feel bad for UAB.

That's a shame.

And even more shameful that it appears it all boils down to politics or a grudge.

I'm guessing UAB is mostly a commuter school, but Birmingham is still a big city in a football crazy state, with no NFL team. Seems they had could have happily co-exsisted forever with Alabama and Auburn.

UAB players are free to transfer without sitting out a year.

That medical school is serious business. I know three UofL Medical School grads who went on to do their residencies there. The university hospital system there is HUGE.

Thanks to Gov. George Wallace, as I understand it.

Disgusting.

You don't lie to a coach and him in there for one year.

You don't sit there and lie to the players faces about what it's really about.

Feel awful for the players and coaches of UAB. For the families that work for the football program.

UAB should close.

Sorry to hear about this. I spend a fair amount of time in Alabama and see the dynamics....and Alabama and Auburn football rule the roost. No other school nor any other sport come close. My son played basketball for Alabama-Huntsville, and they schedule as many road games as they can in the fall so they can save their home games for when football season is over.
