We hear a lot about the 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th regions. What is going on in the 8th Region? I know Simon Kenton is in the 8th Region as well as Walton-Verona and Owen County, correct? Who are some other 8th Region teams to look out for and who are some 8th Region players to look out for other than my personal favorite, Carson Williams? Are there any 8th Region teams that should be ranked in the Top 20 in the state?

Just curious. Thanks in advance for the info.

The 8th is a weird region in that it is sort of close to three major urban areas (Lou, Lex, Cincy) but far enough away that it doesn't reap the benefits of the talent existing in those areas. It actually was a more competitive region for the state title before consolidation (see Oldham and Shelby schools) and realignment (Scott County to the 11th). Simon Kenton and Grant County in NKy are large schools but have never done much (excluding Troy McKinley's 9th region Simon Kenton team) down state. Not much college-level talent year in and out.

On the other hand, you could argue that there is as much college level talent as any other region in the state.....which hasn't been a lot recently.

No one in the 8th should be ranked in the top 20. The 8th Region is nowhere near where it used to be (Shelby County and Oldham County have split; Scott County and Bullitt East are gone) but it is still a very fun and competitive region. The southern two districts (29 and 30) have ruled the region for quite some time as last year was the first time since Gallatin County in 2008 that a team from district 31 or 32 has made it to the finals. No team from those two districts has won the 8th Region title going back to 1999.

Collins and South Oldham have been arguably the top two teams the past two years but both may take a step back this year. Oldham County will probably be the favorite with Simon Kenton, Grant County, and Shelby County not too far behind.

Watched South Oldham last Saturday in Paris for a scrimmage game. I thought they looked like a good fundamentally sound team with some tall kids. But I don't have anything to base that on it was the first time I've ever seen them play. While the final score escapes me I know they did win against a solid Augusta Panther team.

I saw Grant Co. last season and I thought they were a good team last yr but again I don't have anything to compare to. I don't know what they lost to graduation or what they have coming back this yr.

Simon Kenton starts their season at the feildhouse Dec 2nd and I know about MaCo so maybe after that game it will tell me where they stand. But it's hard to base anything on one game and being from the 10th region we don't have very many opportunities to see the 8th region teams. :idunno:

Jtown scrimmages both Collins & Shelby Co.. I think Collins have the edge with a steady point guard in Brent & and some other kids that can score. Shelby is very well coached but does not have a true goto guy. They have their biggest kid playing point which is not his position.

Oldham, Simon Kenton, Collins, Shelby would be very competitive with any of the top 25 preseason teams.

As for players from those teams, Oldham: Hawes, Hicks. SK: Robinson, Pratcht. Collins: Kidwell, Cochran.

Shelby: Gordan, Manica if he is healthy. Owen: Williams of course. Anderson: Cummings. North Oldham: Henry

Probably not this year...and to be quite honest probably not a whole lot of years, not in boys basketball anyway. Just don't seem to have an overwhelming amount of talent at any one school at any one time. Splitting Shelby County up and adding Collins 4 or so years ago hurt one of the few perennial power houses in the 8th.

No private schools in the 8th. I wonder what other regions can say the same thing?

A few years ago Cornerstone Christian in Shelbyville was going to join the KHSAA but their numbers dropped off and they abandoned the idea. They actually had some pretty good teams for a couple of years and defeated quite a few KHSAA teams including Henry County and Eminence in the 8th Region.
