Braves trade Heyward and Walden to Cardinals

Featured Replies

As a Cardinal fan I like the trade.

I will love the trade if they can resign an extension with Heyward.

Redbirds may not attempt to re-sign Heyward -- pick up another high draft pick instead.

STL newspaper just did a story on Jenkins. Heck of an athlete, high draft choice who has made nice strides recently as a pitcher.

I miss Heyward already. He always plays hard and he will save a lot of runs in right field with his defense. He can play center field pretty well too.

With 3 years/$45 million left on his contract, that's what most likely will happen. We might see teams get a bit more interested if he has a better year next season and the fact that teams will only have to pay for 2 years of that big contract.

I don't see if happening or at least deemed as "likely"

Kinda the same situation as Uggla. Contract too big and production too awful.

Braves saved around $8 million this year from trading Heyward.

While they may not spend it all it does bode well for the season through trade or picking up an additional free agent.

Closer to $10 million when you add in Walden.

I just want to know what the Braves line up will look like next year... I'm assuming something like this:

SS-Simmons

CF-BJ Upton

1B-Freeman

RF-J. Upton

LF-Gattis

3B-Johnson

C-Bethancourt

2B-???

Pitcher

If the rumors are true, we might see Johnson, Gattis and either/both Uptons in different uniforms next year.

Gosselin might play 2nd for a while until Peraza is ready, or maybe the Braves sign someone.

Interesting comments from Hart.

“He wanted a two-year deal and wasn’t interested in a long-term extension unless the dollars were maybe beyond where the club certainly wanted to go. We had a strong feeling he was going to go on the market. That’s what he wanted to do. We wanted to protect ourselves and position ourselves better. If we elect, next year, to be one of 30 [teams] that compete for Jason on the market then that’s what we’ll do.”

Heyward said that he tried to get a long term extension in Atlanta and that the Braves never offered or even hardly talked to him about one earlier today. I believe he mentioned the last time he talked about long term extension with the team was with Frank Wren in 2012 and that only lasted a few minutes.

I'll be surprised if they can get rid of B.J. but if they can more power to them. Justin could possibly bring back Walker from SEA. Sounds like the Braves are trying to stock up on pitching.

Braves are meeting with Jon Lester on Thursday.

Fangraphs did a little more research on Heyward and said the floor for his next contract is $175 million with the ceiling being $300 million.

Choo recently got $130 mil over 7 years...so I could definitely see Heyward getting $200 million over 10.

It's interesting with Lester. The Braves saved $11 million with the trade and he's looking at getting near $20 million a year.

He lives outside of Atlanta so I wonder if he would offer any small discount to reside at home all year long with his family?

If the Braves trade either Upton then they'll free up plenty to sign Lester. Seen on a website that they could even offer a more back loaded deal to coincide with their moving into the new stadium in 2017.

I really don't expect Lester to sign with anyone but the Red Sox. Hopefully I'm wrong and a miracle happens with a trade involving BJ Upton.
