Can Teams Practice If School Is Cancelled?

Featured Replies

Unless things have changed Kenton County does not allow practice.

Yet they allowed basketball games to be played last year.

I feel like there were a couple instances last year where school was cancelled and Kenton County allowed games and even practice. Generally though, if school is out in KC, there is no practice.

RJS as you and I have discussed multiple times, who knows. As I tell my parents, I have no idea, we will find out that day what the policy is for that day.

Yep. Seems like the "rule" changes from situation to situation. Last year was the first I remember where they did allow practice in some instances on a snow day. Suddenly you had to pay attention to whether "school was cancelled" or if "all activities are cancelled". I've already been told by my AD that there is no practice tomorrow if school is cancelled "as per district policy".

I think that is the case...that you assume activities are cancelled when school is. But I think they can ask for permission...kinda based on how the day progresses. And I believe it has to be non-mandatory (meaning you can't hold kids that don't come accountable). I think Boone is the same way.

I don't think they can ask for permission. I know coach Steiner wasn't' able to practice for close to a week during the hoop season. Will they budge when it's for a regional championship? Interesting that both schools are in the same county district.

County to county. Jefferson County cannot by their own rule. Private schools can and will practice.

Unless of course you are a private Catholic school...

Believe they can do what they want, somebody correct me if I am wrong but they beat to their own drum

This is where common sense comes into play. Roads may be bad in the morning and cancelling school is called/the right thing to do. However, by the afternoon roads are clean and drivable, so practice away.

Great for those who play another NKy school IF the schools both do or do not practice, but how much is it a disadvantage to the team that does not practice today (and looks like again tomorrow) if your opponent 90 miles south and in school/at practice for one or more days than you?

If it were a UK basketball game you sure would find a way to get there...heck its deer season right now and I will bet the kids that don't go to school will sure find a way to get to their tree stands, heck thats where I would go if school was cancelled:thumb:

If yu want something bad enough, you will find a way to make it happen so I don't buy "I can't or We can't" or "they won't allow"

with regards to road safety, There is a big difference between 7am and 3pm.

NKY teams in the playoffs

Newport @ NCC - Both Closed

Frankfort @ Beechwood - Both 1 hr delay

Simon Kenton @ Dixie - Both Closed

Cov Cath @ Highlands - Cov Cath Closed, Highlands 1 hr delay

While it isn't ideal for a team to miss practice today, if there's a day that you can miss, it's monday. Monday is typically a film/lifting/conditioning day. With HUDL, players can still look at film. Tuesday and Wednesday are the important practice days as that's when the game plan gets installed. I don't see missing today as a huge disadvantage.
