All State Baseball Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Stupid contract. That's what I thought when I first read it... Stanton, Marlins Discussing 12-Year, $320MM Deal ? MLB Trade Rumors
stickymitts Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The Marlins will never win with that contract.
formerkywrestler Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I'd disagree. Even with a projected decline he should get that value if not more. The only scary thing for me is he hasn't always been the healthiest players. But, if the Marlins aren't going to spend elsewhere and actually keep the players then it probably doesn't matter how much money they give Giancarlo. I'm curious if they give out their first no-trade. If I'm Giancarlo I demand one.
Capernicus41 Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 If I am going to give out one of these contracts, I'd rather give it to a guy like this who is 24. Not a 30 year old Albert Pujols. That being said, I'm not sure why teams still think they need to sign these big name players to win.
LRCW Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Stupid contract. Mr. Stanton vehemently disagrees.
formerkywrestler Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 9:36am: Heyman reports that the two sides are very serious about getting a deal done, suggesting that it could end up being for a whopping 13 years. The two sides are said to be on the same page regarding money, Heyman writes, but two non-monetary issues still need to be worked out: a no-trade clause and a potential opt-out clause midway through the deal. One source characterized the negotiations as being on the 10-yard line.

formerkywrestler Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Doesnt this limit their ability to get or keep players? The size of the contract, the NTC/opt-out, or both?
Clyde Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The size of the contract' date=' the NTC/opt-out, or both?[/quote'] $$$$
formerkywrestler Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 $$$$Absolutely. If they do NOT raise the payroll this could (maybe will) hurt them. But, I also think the fans (the few they have) would leave in droves if they didn't make a real, honest effort to sign Stanton. In straight dollar terms this isn't a bad contract for him. It could however turn into a bad contract for the franchise if they keep penny-pinching. Over the years my stance has hardened and while a lot of them were decent baseball moves the fiasco in 2012 hurt their image with fans, players, etc. This is a good step in the right direction. P.S. Anytime that fiasco is brought up I feel the need to say, "Screw You Heath Bell!"
ggclfan Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Just seen that he and the Marlins are negotiating on a 12-year, $325 MM contract. WOW... Has ANY MLB team ever signed a player to a 10 year (or more) contract and ended up happy about it?? Seriously, there may be one or two out there but I cannot think of one. I about threw up when the Reds signed Votto to his contract - this one is worse...
