At what point of your training do they take away your personality and teach you to be condescending jerks??? I can see during arrests, detainments, questioning of smart alleck people giving it right back. It is a stressful job and situation.

 

That being said, when a person enters a department to pay a parking ticket, it isn't exactly a stressful setting. Is it that difficult to make eye contact and not talk down to someone? Today was like dealing with a customer service rep. I looked over at the guy and just wondered exactly when he saved the world, or cured cancer, or made time travel possible. Those are the only achievements that I could think of that would give a person that much of a sense of entitlement.

 

You are never taught to be a jerk but you are treated so poorly by so many people (including your superiors and the people you work with) that it takes a special person to rise above it all.

Most the young cops are jerks. The older they get the nicer they become.

I will have to say, I've never had a bad experience with a cop. Not that I've had many dealings with them in a professional manner though.

Your opinion doesn't count. Cops tend to be really nice to attractive women. My wife once was pulled over two Tuesdays in a row, for the same exact traffic violation, at the same exact light at the corner of Dixie and Orphanage, d let go with a warning both times w/ the commment, "I'll be here next Tuesday."

I think it is a good thing for cops to be proud of their badge but some look at it as a license to be an arrogant jerk.

 

A guy I met in college was the son of the then Police Chief of Cincinnati. His father would address the class of new recruits and something he always would ask them, "Are you any better than the rest of the people in this city?" Of course the young recruit would say no. He would reply, "Well, starting today you better be to serve on this force." I always liked him.

Great point! The mixed messages come early and often.

FWIW, I have never used my female ways to get out of a ticket. I am respectful to all police officers though; even the jerks. It's a stressful job already; they don't need any additional hassles and getting them riled up only makes situations worse.

 

Maybe the guy you encountered today was just having a bad day.
