Even as a Mayfield fan I would take the field. Odds are too lopsided. I would have said that the last several years also. That's just smart betting IMO. With that said..............I do think if we play like we did against Caldwell, it would be a shocker if we don't hoist another trophy this year. I have seen lots of inconsistent play from the boys this year that could spell disaster against a strong team. One bad game now, and you're done!

A week or two ago I was not as bullish on Mayfield, The Russellville game got me worried but after the Caldwell game I believe if Mayfield can play with that intensity on both sides of the ball then I like their odds. However, I believe Beechwood is the real deal this season. The game against Mt Healthy stands out in my mind because they are a undefeated team from Cincinnati that Beechwood went toe to toe with. A matchup with BW would be on their turf and they got something to prove. I believe Pikeville will be out of the east and I really don't know much about them except they had a very impressive win against Belfry. Mayfield probably has the best defense in 1A and that alone should keep them in any 1A matchup and if their offense is clicking it will extremely tough to beat them. One bad game and you're done.

Beechwood is solid this year, but, let's not forget they were manhandled by a mediocre Dixie and a decent, at best, Mt Healthy team. The CC win looks average right now and the Franklin win wasn't as good as Mayfields win over Graves.

Mt Healthy is rated #2 in division 2 region 6, I would say that's pretty good knowing what I know about Ohio high school football. Beechwood is a solid club like you say. Graves is playing some good ball right now. Not sure I would call Dixie mediocre as they have played pretty decent.

Hmmm ... interesting. Right now calpreps.com has Dixie ranked #4 in the entire state. They have Mt. Healthy rated even better than Dixie. Covington Catholic is ranked higher than both Graves County and Franklin Co. Graves Co. is slightly higher than Graves so on that one point you may be right.

Lose one game and your done applies to everyone else in 1A too. Not just Mayfield.

Really flawed logic. You are comparing scores from last year, with no regard to returning players or improvement? As silly as that is, BW lost to Cov Cath last year by 30, beat them this year by 15. Lost last year to Franklin County, no contest this year. BW is not even remotely like last years team, which was young and made up of mostly first year starters. Markedly better this year. Mayfield has struggled with teams this year they beat last year, including a loss to a mediocre McCracken team. No clue who wins the game, but only those who haven't seen BW play this year are dismissing them.

 

BW may very well be good BUT Mayfield's margins of victories are nearly identical from last year. McCracken beat Mayfield this year by the same margin Mayfield beat them last year...1 point. And Mayfield slaughtered the 2A #1 team by a bigger margin than they beat Mayfield last year. Mayfield is 1 point away from a perfect regular season and that loss was to a very good McCracken team. Actually a McCracken team that was fully staffed when we played them. Morgan Alexander hasn't been on the field since Mayfield with and injury and I guarantee that makes a huge difference to that team. He's likely the best safety in west Ky and that's just one great player they have been down since Mayfield. So I cant go with your logic here when discussing Mayfield struggling and losing to a mediocre McCracken team..they were top 5 in 6A when they played Mayfield.

You can't count Beechwood out this year, imo. I think it is a 2way race. However, Williamsburg could pull of a win in the championship game like Hazard did a few years ago if Beechwood and Mayfield beat each other up badly in the semis

Mayfield is the favorite and no one can take it from them. Since 09 they have been the west rep and are 3-2 in the title game. Yes in those 3 games they have won they have all been blow out and in there losses one was a blow or well in hand and the other was pretty close even though the momentum in that game stayed in Hazards favor most of the game.. It was pointed out by many impartial football fans that Jonathan Jackson was definitely injured. That is one player that makes a difference.

Margins are the same, but Mayfield has given up less than 100 points this season. I think their defense makes them harder to beat. You have to make the most of every possession.

I know, I was saying those things on purpose in response to Malibu's comment about a mediocre McCracken team.. A 9-1 6a team that's been ranked in the Top 10 all year, in the top 6 most of the year, is far from mediocre.. Graves is a very good team, Caldwell Co is a very good team, Murray and Tilghman are solid teams that'll make noise in the playoffs and McCracken is very good, as well. Mayfield doesn't have to apologize to anyone for that type schedule.. Just because they aren't from NKy and Ohio doesn't mean they're not good teams..

He may have but it never stopped him on defense where mayfield played solid... I guess him being hurt made those 5 INTS as well..Mayfield was made 1-D in this game and lost it in the trenches.. But let's forget about the past and I think who ever comes from east will keep it competitive.
