Mayfield was voted the #1 team in 78 at the end of the season by the lit rating, which was about the only they did it in those days. Maybe they were, maybe they weren't. This is just a hypothetical discussion anyway.

Beechwood 1997.

 

Beechwood (14-0) beat teams from all four classes in Kentucky. They beat Covington Catholic, which who won the AAA title. They beat the state's largest school, North Hardin, and throttled two Ohio playoff teams, Purcell Marian and Wyoming. The AA winner that year was Bourbon Co. who I think had some losses including losing to NCC. The AAAA winner was St.X who won 3-0 in the final and had 3 losses for the year.

I am glad someone brought them up. This is the very very rare A school who had the size, speed, and ability to beat anyone. We played them and Highlands that year. Beechwood ' s line would have given the Birds fits. They would have had to get out of their 5-3 to contend w JLO to Stegman, Smith, and Stinson. Would Would have been an awesome game.

What would be your guys favorites for 1990? I don't want to self proclaim them because I don't know who won the other classes right off hand. I do know Ashland had a dominate team that year with multiple 1000 yard rushers.

I came across this online recently. It is all the KHSAA magazines from 1974-75. Assume others are out there just haven't figured a way to find them all. This page is for the playoff brackets. You can move page to page to see other stuff.

What is amazing compared to today is that prior to 1974 everyone outside of Louisville competed for 2 state championships. In 1975 they went to 4 class system. you can find the 1975-76 alignment on page 43.

prior to 1975 you could have 10 teams in your district and only 1 team made the playoffs.

My problem trying to remember teams is that while I might remember some great teams, I can't recall who else was winning championships in the same years so I can't really pick an overall top team.
