October 29, 201411 yr Obvious to me. They are not buying FSU in that they could have lost 4 games now, and Notre Dame has looked poor in games against UNC, Purdue, and Syracuse. Alabama has looked good in one game this season and that was against a Texas A&M team that is likely benching their starting QB now. Beat Arkansas by how many points?
October 29, 201411 yr 7 of the last 8 national champions In which there was no real method of determining who the best two teams really were and good teams were left out of the title game in several of those years in favor of an unproven team that was in many cases likely unworthy. I'm looking in your direction, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. It's like saying the American was the greatest basketball league last year because it had four of the past 15 national champions. Everyone knew it wasn't and we had empirical evidence to back it up. We all think the SEC is a great conference because it appears they have great football. They have outstanding athletes and good coaches. It all seems to fit together. What we don't have is any empirical evidence beyond the fact that the SEC Champion was awarded a spot in the national title game and often times got to play an opponent that didn't appear to be all that great. It's a natural consequence of the way football operates.

I will say that the West Virginia win in which Bama looked less than dominant is looking better and better every week. If I had to pick a team that's going to get it together on both sides of the ball and ultimately win the SEC West, I think it'll be them.
October 29, 201411 yr The talking heads are speculating that the committee is giving much more weight to good wins than to good losses. That's the problem. The talking heads build up the SEC and tear down everyone else. Are we foolish enough to believe that the talking heads don't influence the committee? I think it is obvious. LSU was doody until they beat Ole Miss. At home. Most SEC teams win. At home. Even UK is formidable. At home. The SEC is the best conference for sure but the over inflation of just how good they are ruins all perspective on everything else in college football. Especially when past results are used to dictate the present.

Auburn vs K State Oregon vs Mich St Bama vs WVU UGA vs Clemson UGA vs GT ASU vs ND LSU vs Wisc That is 7 big OOC matchups from the top teams. ND vs ACC teams doesn't count. ASU - Pac12 Auburn - SEC Bama - SEC Clemson - ACC GT - ACC K State - Big12 LSU - SEC Mich State - Big10 ND - ACC/Ind Oregon - Pac12 UGA - SEC Wisc - Big10 WVU - Big12 So total big OOC games played: ACC - 3 (inc ND) SEC - 5 (UGAx2) Big10 - 2 Big12 - 2 Pac12 - 2 OK. Maybe I didn't explain myself well. Nobody plays a lot of great out of conference games. It's a problem across football that I do think is getting better (although unfortunately thanks to a rise in awful neutral site games). What I mean is that while all leagues are insular, no other league is rewarded for it like the SEC. SEC teams beat each other up in league games and it's "See how tough it is to win week in, week out in the SEC?" while if the PAC 12 beats each other up in league games its "See there's just not a really great team out there this year."

Watching SEC vs. the World every season was getting old. I watch a ton of college football and I didn't even bother watching the Alabama/ND national title game two years ago. Dull. Give me something new.

Not one year can we say the best team didn't win. To me that's the most important thing. At the same time I don't believe that the 2-5th teams in the SEC are always the 2-5th best teams in the nation.

I'd have loved to see what Stanford in 2010 or 2011 could have done against the champs. Oklahoma State had a heck of a team in 2011 as well. There are others but I like the idea that maybe, just maybe, we're getting closer to a system in which you actually have to prove you're the best on the field rather than speculating about who may or may not have had the best season based on opinion or possibly flawed computer rankings. We still need at least one more expansion of the playoff to really eliminate the possibility of ranking error determining the champion.
