Heard Ryle has a very good team. Big, fast, and athletic. Also heard 500+ yards rushing for Ryle. Great job Ryle. Hope my Birds learn from these type games and get better for the future. #SCIT

I peeked in at the end of the first half. Ryle's offense had some very nice skilled players.

 

I got to see Crosley New for the first time this yr as well. He is a tremendous athlete who should develop into an outstanding HS player. QB Schoellman throws a very nice and accurate ball. I can see him also developing into a very good QB.

 

Bird defense struggled with containment but I think a lot had to do with the outstanding speed Ryle had.

Ryle scored the first TD on a pass play, but there was not much air action, perhaps 3-5 attempts. The sweeps were devastating and not much need to throw it when the Birds could not stop the run. The boys need to continue to work hard and stay focused to finish the season undefeated. Both teams played very hard.

From the games I have seen Ryle has the best team in NKY. As far as, "the not much need to throw it", while it is true there is not much need to throw it if your intent is to win frosh games (Ryle is good enough to never throw a pass and beat everyone in NKY), it is not true if you want to have any measure of success at the varsity level. Developing a QB and a passing game has to start early.

An important, if not the most important aspect of Frosh football is about developing players for the varsity level and developing them in the same system so there is a clear and efficient transition. Another important aspect is fostering an environment where players keep a strong interest. As we all know some kids develop at a slower rate than others. A kid that is not as good at the freshman level could develop and grow into a fantastic player at the varsity level. These are two areas where Highlands is doing a great job.

 

Another approach is to kick onside kicks while up 30 late in the game and use a fraction of its roster.

 

Both approaches will win you games but I have to believe the first approach is a more sustainable long-term model.

Posey had another big game receiving. Bout 40 or 50 yard TD catch on the birds first play on offense. New had tremendous game as well on both sides of the ball. Birds just lack tackling overall. But Ryle has a great freshman team!

They simply line up and tell you where they're going to run it and dare you to stop it. Seemed like they had maybe four or five plays total in their playbook last night. On a negative note for the Raiders, I would have liked to seen a little more class out of the coaching staff for the Raiders. Two onside kicks in the fourth quarter up 30 points is absurd anyway you write it up. And then the head coach taking pictures of the scoreboard after the game... Come on man!

A Ryle gentleman involved with the team that I am familiar with does post the scoreboard pic on his personal facebook page. Has for 5 weeks straight. No big deal.

Interesting feedback. Without question Ryle seemingly always has a very talented group of Freshmen.

It's interesting to me that their offensive system has not seemed to change one iota on the Freshman level even with the brand new coach. Nor apparently has the notion of playing a select fraction of their roster both ways changed (per the observations made by posters here). I've never understood why, when you have 40-50 kids on your roster that you have so many playing both ways- in Freshman ball no less.

I can see how one would think this is a possibility. I even thought this might be the case as well. But earlier in the game the kicker was kicking the ball down field very consistently. The kicker was also making extra points with little to no trouble. As we all know, even a bad squib kick is typically going to at least make it to the second level of the return team. These two kicks were directly at the first level of the return team and obviously kicked to not go more than 10 yards. The negative reaction that was easily heard from many of the Ryle fans of the onside kicks was even obvious. Like I said, different teams have different approaches...

 

On a side note, Ryle does probably have one of the best kickers I have seen at the freshman level this year.
