I've never seen a picture of the paddle. I guess they selected a paddle because of the river town rivalry.

Yes. Its a small wooden paddle hand painted Dayton on one side Bellevue on the other. With these 2 schools winning this game is a close to a championship as they will get and with the cities right next to each other its a big thing to win begging about it for the rest of their lives. I would lile to see the winner awarded with something nicer that's all I am saying

You obviously don't get these kids. Most come from single parent homes, poverty, issues with drug abuse in the family, low income housing, etc... It represents them perfectly. They are not about material, tangible things. Its about the symbolism of hard work, pride in coming from a river town, and having something that you can relate to. I'm proud to say that I'm a river rat. Wouldnt have it any other way. May the better team win tonight!

It is actually a nice different looking symbol of the game. Much like NCC/ Newport bell or like the Keg of Nails that Louisville and UC play for. Or Paul Bunyan's Ax that some other college team play for.

Nothing like stereotyping most kids from Dayton and Bellevue. You are incorrect, they come from families that are generally blue collar/hard working but but many have modest incomes. Yes there probably is a higher percentage of parents abusing alcohol/drugs and neglecting some of the things their kids need. However, there are a lot of parents in the well to do areas also abusing alcohol/drugs but they have the money to mask it and send their kids to school with what they need.

I love the Paddle. Its signifies something between the 2 cities. A real trophy or something of that wouldnt fit the 2 cities. I think a paddle is perfect. I played in the first battle and I enjoy the paddle as the trophy. Of course this is just my opinion, but I was a player in the game so it works with me.

I never played for the paddle, but think it's cool that they do. It's relevant considering that the game is between two neighboring towns sitting on the river.

I do admit to "overselling" the stereotype a little. But Bellevue kids embrace the idea that they they are not privileged as others and the ones that do have the modest incomes and stable families share the community. So, what goes on in a town less than one square mile affects everyone.

 

Q, I know it's been a while since you were in the Bellevue school system. Do you know that the income base has reached a point that Bellevue qualified as a totally free lunch school?

I would agree with you on most points. It is hard to fathom the free lunch numbers. I think you will start seeing a change as more young professionals move into the city and start families. There are a lot more people getting involved in the school system who are professionals and not hometown cronies. They have moved in and want their property values to increase and one of the best ways is to improved your schools. Look at Ft. Thomas.

Didn't know that. I knew that Dayton schools was at or slightly above 90% over the past two school years prior to this one.

There's a lot of younger professionals living in Bellevue and Dayton without kids. I do agree with you on your point about people stepping up to get involved. There's three or four people running for Dayton City Council who aren't originally from there and they are likely going to make it.

Then again...look at Newport. Hasn't exactly been a beacon of academic light. Most of the new money sent their kids elsewhere either into a Cincinnati private school w/ a few at NewCath. I sympathize with a lot of parents who seemingly tilt against windmills at these schools. I think that Dayton has the perfect Supervisor in place w/ Brewer to expand in proper directions. I'm not as familiar w/ Bellevue as I used to be.

Things have improved a lot at Dayton since Brewer has become Superintendent. Last year had a really small graduating class, but every student was accepted in to college, tech school, etc., which was a first for a graduating class in a long time, if ever.
