I don't think Winston should be suspended for selling his autograph, just like I felt like Gurley shouldn't have been. I think Winston has made some really stupid decisions and I think that if I were Jimbo, I'd have hired 3 babysitters for him to be with him at all times, but I don't think he should be suspended for the autographs alone.

How much do you think Todd Gurley made per autograph in proportion to what he made the school in sales of his jersey? Now what if Gurley has a knee blown out in his next game and can't play again? Let's be real, guys who are big time players are told what classes to take and even if he wanted to be Pre-Med, the coaches would want him focusing on nothing but football his whole time there.

 

I really don't care. The market would even itself out on that kind of thing, IMO, if it were just the Wild Wild West. Take away the aspect of exclusivity from things like autographs and the market for them probably takes a huge dip. Do college football fans decide they want a Gurley, Winston, Marriota, Cooper? Do basketball fans want Myles, Towns, Okafor, Alexander, Oubre, or Johnson?

Heck, even let the schools pay them, have them authenticated, and have it regulated instead of seedy autograph guys like the one who turned in Gurley, put the money in a trust for them for when they graduate or complete their eligibility, and they have a nice start after college.

Okay, and at one point putting cream cheese on a bagel was against the rules because that was a meal, but a plain bagel wasn't. Rick Majerus had to report a secondary violation because he bought Keith Van Horn a meal at a restaurant while waiting for him to catch a flight after he'd gotten saying that his father had just died. Those were rules at one point too. I'm not arguing it's not against the rules, and I'd be in favor of seeing the rule change.

 

Right now, the rules do nothing but hurt the players. Without the top players, the school isn't making the money they do. Who is being hurt if Gurley can sell his autograph? Some school like Valdosta State who doesn't have that kind of recruiting budget and couldn't get him anyway? For big time athletes, the whole student-athlete concept is a facade. Do you really think that some coach would be okay with a big time player missing a practice to study for a final? Who wins the argument if Dakari decides he wants to take 20 hours of Bio Chem and Engineering classes that are only offered at one time, but that time conflicts with one hour of practice and Cal says no?

It is what it is. Every student athlete knows it's wrong to sign autographs or give away memorabilia in exchange for money or goods. Winston knew the rules and he broke them. He's useless and I hope he never plays another down of college football.

If it can't be proven he took money then he won't miss a down. They have proof on Gurley. From what I have gathered they don't have that proof yet on Winston.
