He doesn't desereve all the blame the turnovers hurt us, and the officials

didn't do us any favors plus their need to be defensive adjustments against a team like Lex Catch.I made a comment about play calling and it was blown out of proportion. IMO the play calling handicaps us because Mason wants to run the ball to much we need more balance like the first drive of the game.

And we still only got 3 points on that drive. I just feel like with the pieces we have this season our only big play threat is the quarterback and he can't throw it to himself. Aidan is a workhorse who will grind out every yard possible but he isn't going to run away from anyone. Brown and Devins both have some speed but they too aren't running away from anyone. I think we have a good stable of possession receivers but none seem to be in the same vein as a Lloyd Hall, Devon Cox, Chris Cook, Rees Macshara, Jarrod Harrington or Zack Hester who can take a screen pass 80 yards to the house. I think not having that home run hitter changes our offense drastically.

You don't have to have home run hitter's to have a ball control offense, but the passing game does work Mason showed it on the first drive IMO you have to have enough balance on offense to keep the defense honest or they will put 10 or 11 in the box like LC did against the bone and make it very hard to run the ball. LC'S OC spread us out and ran the ball down our throat Ryan's longest pass completion was 18 yds 98% of his passes were 8 yds or less, and there is no reason why we can't do the same thing if you think about it LC runs mainly a ball control offense Ryan only went deep a couple of times they throw the short 5 or 6 yard pass to the flat and let their receivers get what they can, and when our DB's are giving a 10 yard cushion it's simple pitch and catch for 7 or 8 yards on almost every play.Boyle has to tighten up the corners somewhat and rush 4 instead of 3 to sure up the run D and put more pressure on the QB that's my opinion any way, as you can see I don't blame Mason for all of Boyle's problems I just think it would help to have some kind of passing game to help keep the defense honest.

I don't think it has been mentioned that Boyle had two starting linemen out. One being their best defensive lineman being suspended and the other good lineman injured. As for the play calling, I have always said that Boyle must be 2 TD's better than any good team they play because of the inept play calling by the OC. Another problem is having the QB come to the sidelines to get the next play. Robbins plays both ways and certainly doesn't need to add 20 yards running to the sidelines and back on every offensive play. If he does that only 30 times a game. do the math. He is a great athlete, but think the energy he could save if the OC gave hand signals like they do with the LC QB. Even the JV OC Seth Tamme is able to give signals to the freshman QB from the sidelines and it works great. Mason is very slow in getting the play called and to the QB that it puts a strain on the QB and the offense to start the play without a penalty. It happened once in the first half of the LC game, a delay penalty on a critical down and it was all on Mason. When you talk about penalties on the offense, you also realize that Mason is the offensive line coach as well. Whose responsibility is it to get this corrected?

Thanks for the info I wasn't aware that we had two lineman out.

Relax Boyle fans! You are a 6-1 team. You have quality players and coaches. A ton of tradition that so many envy. Ask me as an LC parent if I feel confident playing Boyle again. I will tell you what we all will say on our side, we don't want that rematch.

I do agree with Robbins. He's too good and valuable to have that much burden on his shoulders. Playing both ways is a big no no against a team like LC that runs an uptempo no huddle offense. Robbins looked gassed to me in the 2nd half. Surely Boyle has s capable safety to relieve him.

Game of inches gentlemen. A better throw on third and goal the wide out scores. LC goes for it on 4th down and on their drive and Hatton catches a touchdown. That's the little stuff that can cost a team. But I swear Boyle is 1 of about 5 teams that can win 4A. And no I don't believe we should mail it to Fort Thomas. Highlands deserves to be the favorite but boy I hope we get a shot at them this season

Pretty dang even just looking at stats. But that may not tell the tale.

LC had quite a bit better passing success.

LC had 11 3rd and 4th down conversions vs. 7 for Boyle

Boyle had 1 more giveaway

For those in attendance what was the difference in the game? One or all of the above? Or something else that doesn't show up in the stat sheet?

The two opening drives were key. LexCath keeps Boyle to a FG when it looked like a TD was coming. Then Jordon Hatton makes a signature catch at the end of the endzone to shift the momentum to Knights early. Then the fumble on the first play after the ensuing KO was big and lead to some cushion. After getting the 12-3 lead it became more back and forth. So the first 3 series were key.

The Rebels not having a defensive answer to Jones helped. The spread offense makes Jones more difficult to defend.

Not sure if the playing two ways by Boyle key players factored in. When quarterback and RB are also in the top 4 of tackles they are obviously carrying a heavy load. But mother nature also kicked in at the end with a sudden downpour - literally dampening the last 2 Boyle drives.

If the teams play again the biggest thing to look for will be better and more frequent passing by Boyle. That is still a area of concern for the Knights and there a couple of key passes that were to open receivers that were overthrown.

Nice comment Lex. I was saying some of the same things about LC when people were writing them off for those three early losses. I do think we will see a rematch in Nov. I am sure both teams will make changes and improvements these next few weeks. Should be another great game.

That screen pass to Ogbogu out in the flat got 7 yards everytime, even when he fumbled, and he broke one for that 34 yard touchdown where he made 3 guys look foolish. Boyle was playing Cover 4 all game it looked like and it would be easy to say that they need to come out of that to try and take that screen away.

Personally I don't think they can do that though. It looked like to me that LC's receivers were athletically a lot better than Boyle's corners which would make man coverage a bad idea. I think Boyle should keep doing what they are doing and trust their zone discipline and fundamentals to take away deep routes, they just need to come up and make tackles.

Boyle is a very well coached team and they play like that. They just aren't athletically superior to top teams anywhere besides quarterback.

Josiah Robbins - the QB/Safety/Punter for Boyle County - is only a junior and an exceptional athlete for sure. You always want someone like that on the field at all times. But if Smith can develop a safety to play some snaps in his place on defense it might serve the Rebels well later this year and definitely next year. His passing game is good - hitting almost 60% of his passes coming into the game and 2 of Boyle County's scores were passing TDs Friday. But if they can sharpen up his technique a bit he will be even more dangerous. A couple of of incomplete passes were slight overthrows that would have gone for TDs.

Not sure if being a QB in college is his goal but he is definitely a 'next-level' player at some position.

I have worked on the sideline for 21 years and Mason's play calling is not what it use to be. Not saying that he is a bad OC, but that it seems to me that he is calling plays a little different than years passed. I still think he is a outstanding OC. But he likes throwing the ball more than running it. I have seen Coach Smith raise his voice to him a couple of time about that.

I posted a couple of days ago about the scores of years passed and new that this would be a game we could win or lose. LC deserved to win the game they played better and made the plays when needed. 2 plays that stand out to me are, (1) when BC had LC 4th down on the 22 (I think) and you let them throw a TD pass. (2) again had them 4th down on the 13 and let them throw another TD pass. Boyle has alway had a tough time with teams that could pass and the was proven last Friday night.

You say he likes throwing more than running, since he became OC his stats say otherwise according to his stats he has run the ball about 65 to 70% of the time under French and Smith.

That's because they yell at him to run the ball. If not for that he would pass it more.

Boyle wins the rematch. They'll bring the corners up and that'll shut down the old chuck and duck Lexcath offense.

LOL! That rematch is still down 5-6 weeks... but if that is your opinion, so be it. but then again if the corners do come up and press the wideouts, whats going to happen if LC runs a " slugo " ( slant and go ) or how about just go deep to # 2, 3, 1 and 20? All are pretty fast by the way. How about this, if you press the 4-5 wideouts, how are we going to stop the run? I am sure that coach Chuck will adjust his defense by the time/ if there is a rematch. Just hoping for another fun game.

I guess I'll take your word for it since you're on the sideline, but in Smith's first tenure he passed the ball around 40% of the time which is a lot different than whats going on now, Boyle has shown the ability to pass the ball this year with a very good QB and several capable recievers and IMO if they don't use the passing game more the rematch if it happens may have the same results. The wishbone offense was not designed to play catch up.
