Hey guys, got an email today from a fellow "digger" looking for information of a different sort. He wrote:

 

"Hello, i am trying to chronicle high school football history in Florida, and wanted to know if you knew of any matchups involving Florida and Kentucky teams before 2003?"

 

I have a couple of scores to share from my neck of the woods, but the only other thing he has so far is a series of games (maybe 8 altogether) involving Louisville Male.

 

He doesn't have a website (yet anyway,) but IS collecting information.

 

If you have anything to contribute, let me know and I will message you his email address.

Off the top of my head I know Highlands beat the Florida team a couple years ago.

 

Johnson Central didn't report it to the KHSAA but in one of Coach Musick's final seasons they went to Florida and got destroyed by a team.

Miami Belen Jesuit defeated Grant County

 

2000

Rutherford defeated Paul Lawrence Dunbar

So far I have:

 

Louisville Trinity traveled to Pensacola to play (I think) Pensacola High in the early 60's or very late 50s...and got hammered.

 

Ft. Thomas Highlands beat University Christian 47-17 in 2013.

 

Johnson Central didn't report it to the KHSAA but in one of Coach Musick's final seasons they went to Florida and got destroyed by a team. (Musick's last year was 2000.)

2000 Rutherford defeated Lexington Paul Dunbar 32-15

So I think it's safe to say Princeton shouldn't have ever left the state.

Paducah Tilghman played Niceville Florida in 1991 in front of 9000 fans.

The quarterback for PT was Billy Jack Haskins, Mr. KY Football 1992, the son of McCracken County coach Jack Haskins.

Tilghman lost the game but was later rewarded the victory after it was found that Not-so-Niceville employed the help of some ineligible players.

 

The result was recorded as a 1-0 forfeit victory for PT

I have been through Highlands' all-time scores list (with only the one score...listed above,) Owensboro Sr. (nothing,) Madisonville (northing,) Warren Central (nothing,) Bowling Green (one listed above,) and Paducah Tilghman (just the one score.) Surprised that Louisville Manual's pages...as detailed as they are...don't list all the scores. There used to be a site that listed the score of every Jefferson County team...ever...but it is down now. Mayfield has a wonderful site too, but it doesn't list their game-by-game scores.

 

There are a few other schools whose scores are on the web, but I didn't see anything related to Florida.

I find that Princeton playing the Florida teams in the late 30's, early 40's fascinating. Is there a story behind these? The travel must have been by train in those days because driving would have been a haul on a bus or cars. I guess they could have gone by plane, but I doubt it. There had to a connection with a coach, administrator or generous community member.
