September 30, 201412 yr Why wouldn't the police take a little more time to assess the situation and position someone at the cameral monitor to give accurate intel BEFORE confronting the person? It is no doubt that the number of bizarre incidents where there are real people storming UPS facilities for example add a sense of urgency for the police to contain and control a situation, but maybe in this case, their own eyes on the monitor would have sensed the threat differently, cordoned off the area and announced to the guy over the PA that he needs to drop the weapon and exit with his hands up.

Well, it was just lucky that this was on Camera...80% of the store isn't covered by camera's. They could have wasted a lot of time checking through camera shots trying to find this guy, even then on Camera it's had to tell what he has in his hand.
September 30, 201412 yr Not to mention the camera monitors are in the back of Wal-Marts. Also, let's pretend it was a real gun and while they're trying to watch the video the dude shoots someone. Then everyone questions that move and calls the cops cowards for not seeking him out first. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Gotta love the MMQB's.
September 30, 201412 yr How about this, you don't carry something that looks like a real gun around a store. Boom! Problem solved.

September 30, 201412 yr Let's assume it was a real gun. Who was he going to shoot? Was there someone there that we can't see? Isnt anyone in the store a potential target?
September 30, 201412 yr Author Isnt anyone in the store a potential target? No. Not with an officer 30 feet away.
September 30, 201412 yr Well, it was just lucky that this was on Camera...80% of the store isn't covered by camera's. Where did you get that number?
September 30, 201412 yr Let's assume it was a real gun. Who was he going to shoot? Was there someone there that we can't see? The police?
September 30, 201412 yr No. Not with an officer 30 feet away. So because the police where there, he couldn't shoot anyone in the store?
September 30, 201412 yr Where did you get that number? I worked in those stores for 30 years, the last 8 in Asset Protection (The people in charge of the Cameras and other security measures)! The majority of Cameras are on the registers, doors, high theft items/categories and high accident areas. The reason that camera was placed where it was is because there were live fish in that aisle...High Accident Area and High Vandalism Area...other wise there would be a good chance that the store wouldn't have a camera looking down that aisle. There are a handful of stores with "Casino Type" camera coverage, but that is a rarity. The vast majority of stores don't even have Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras that can follow someone around the store from a fixed point.
September 30, 201412 yr Author The police? The guy wasn't looking at the police. Didn't have his gun pointed at the police.
September 30, 201412 yr Author So because the police where there, he couldn't shoot anyone in the store? Police were 30 feet away with guns drawn. Victim was not looking at the police. Not pointing the gun at the police. Not pointing the gun at himself. No one else in the vicinity. Who was in danger that the police couldn't have protected?

No one else in the vicinity. Who was in danger that the police couldn't have protected? The video is quick but didn't he turn towards police though? I only watched it once and can't remember. 30 ft means nothing. If it's a real gun and he wanted to kill them 30 ft isn't helping anyone, nor would any "cover" wal Mart offers. You have to look at the totality of circumstances and put yourself in their shoes. They think it's a real gun and that he's pointed it at people and acting strange. It's easy to say what you would do now but they made a split second decision. Not the right one obviously but they thought it was at the time.

Depending on the layout of that particular store the aisle by the back wall may have went 100 feet or more, it is unknown if anyone was down that aisle or adjoining aisles that could have stepped into his line of sight at any time. However if he had turned and started to fire at the police it would have already been too late to protect anyone. Unfortunately there was no way for the police to know his intentions when he swings the gun forward as he did.
