My parents never bought a new car in their lives until two years ago. Try not to be blinded by the reflections coming off the shiny new cars, because believe me, there are plenty of used cars in the Cov Cath parking lot.

Something else that jumps out at me is the $200,000 wouldn't even be enough to put in a turf field for NKYFL so what good would it do to a program that can't cover the rest of the cost to put that type of field in?

 

Sorry, but although the 200k would do a lot of good, it wouldn't be enough to upgrade the facilities that NKYFL uses and they probably would have trouble raising the other 500k needed or whatever it is. so at least going to a school they can use the money to improve their existing facility.

 

Who said turf is the only available option to "upgrade"? How about simply planting grass and leveling out the football field? Let's get serious....Covington Catholic is the last school in NKY that needed this grant. Period.

I understand "need" wasn't mentioned. I understand it was business. CovCath has high income parents that send their kids to this school. Therefore, in return they are expecting to get more support from the CovCath community for this generous, to say the least, donation. They want these above-average income adults to come to Bengals games, buy Bengals merchandise. Listen, I get it. We all get it. Parents in Dayton likely aren't going to have a whole lot of extra money to attend Bengals games and such. But come on man. Yeah, they asked for the money and they got it. But you seriously can't feel right about that. My stomach churns over it and I don't even like CCH.

Boosters. Boosters. Boosters.

 

Dayton, Ludlow, Bellevue, Newport, etc. don't have the same money flow coming in from their boosters, if they have boosters at all.

 

Not hating, just thinking $200,000 is a lot of money to be giving to a school that can get $200,000 a lot easier than the schools that are in desperate need of new facilities.

 

Congrats to CCH. You get a new field. Oh well. Just would have liked to see the Bengals contribute to a better cause.

 

The Reds donate several new fields to schools in need annually. Granted they aren't as expensive, it still would have been cool to see a new field in places that we typically don't expect to see. That's all.

And for the record, Beechwood DID get their new field and locker room from fundraising. Superintendent Fred Bassett was in charge of the $600,000 track and field idea. He credited athletic boosters for holding fundraisers, generating a lot of money. He also said they solicited thousands and thousands from local businesses. Also, several alumni from Beechwood and faithful fans donated a lot of money as well. Hint the stadium name of "Gene Daniels Stadium". Bassett was quoted as saying, "We couldn't dream of doing this on our own with our own money without hurting academics. " He also stated that with the boosters help with fundraising and such, he was able to focus the district's taxpayers' money on academics rather than athletics. The school spirit shop generated $11,000 for the boosters in the year that the turf field was announced. Think about it, it all starts and ends with boosters. Not the money public schools get from the state. You buy your ticket from a volunteer working on the boosters. Then you buy a soda from someone working in the concession stand on the boosters. Also, the concession stand was built by the boosters. You then proceed to find your seat in the bleachers...built by no other than, the boosters. And watch your kids run around in uniforms, paid for by....YOU GUESSED IT! The boosters. SO while you continue to believe that everything paid for by public schools comes from the state, taken by our tax dollars, you may be right. Beechwood just built a new elementary school, and cafeteria with that money. So yes that helps in that aspect. But as far as our athletic facilities go, they are built because of our boosters. We have sports at public schools, because of the PRIVATE athletic boosters at those schools, not our tax dollar money.
