Misunderstood Song Lyrics

I have always dug Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit' with its groovy, trippy, mystical unique one of a kind vibe, and for years while singing along I just knew that I wasn't completely keen on the exact lyrics while mumbling along with what I thought the words sounded like.

With it being a drug related tune, I just thought that perhaps it wasn't supposed to really make any sense.

The song came to my mind tonight, and I decided to once and for all check out what the true lyrics were compared to what I have all along thought that they were.

Oh I was so wrong numerous times...

Even now with knowing what the real lyrics are I still can't stop singing it the wrong way that I've been singing it all along.

Here are the real lyrics:

"White Rabbit"

One pill makes you larger

And one pill makes you small

And the ones that mother gives you

Don't do anything at all

Go ask Alice

When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits

And you know you're going to fall

Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar

Has given you the call

Call Alice

When she was just small

When the men on the chessboard

Get up and tell you where to go

And you've just had some kind of mushroom

And your mind is moving low

Go ask Alice

I think she'll know

When logic and proportion

Have fallen sloppy dead

And the White Knight is talking backwards

And the Red Queen's off with her head

Remember what the dormouse said

Feed your head

Feed your head

...and here's what I always thought that Grace Slick was singing:

"White Rabbit"

One pill makes you larger

And one pill makes you small

And the ones that mother gives you

Don't do anything at all

Go ask Alice

When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits

And you know you're going to fall

Tell 'em all hookah-smoking character

Has given you the call

Call Alice

When she was just small

When the man on the chessport

Get up and tell you where to go

And you've just had some kind of mushroom

And your mind is moving on

Go ask Alice

I think she'll know

When logic and proportion

Have fallen I'll be dead

And the White Knight is talking backwards

And the Red Queen's on her head

Remember let the dog outside

Feed your head

Feed your head

We are ALL guilty of this on more than one occasion.

Only if you mess up and take the brown acid. It's not particularly good, I've heard.

Alice in Wonderland .

I thought it was :

When logic and proportion

Have fallen on your head

And the White Knight is walking backwards

And the Red Queen's off of her bed

Remember what the doorman said

The biggest crack up for me is thinking that:

"Remember what the dormouse said"

was...

INXS - The One Thing

What it is:

Well you know just what you do to me

The way you move soft and slippery

Cut the night just like a razor

Rarely talk and that's the danger

What I hear:

Well you know just what to do to me

The way you move soft and slippery

Cut the knife just like a razor

Barely top the mashed potatoes

Pina Colada Song.

"If you like making love at midnight

and the dews on the cake."

Honestly wondered what the world?

Later realized it was: In the dunes on the cape.

Can't recall what flick it is with Christina Applegate and somebody else where this song figures prominently. I kind of like it.

Carmen Diaz, maybe?

And I always thought they said, "if you do suffocate." It never made sense, but I rolled with it.

Back to "White Rabbit" .... Stephanie Calvert sings with Starship w/ Mickey Thomas and does a nice job on the song. I've met her a couple of times, really nice gal, great voice. She even favors a young Grace . Here's her doing "Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love."

I had a friend who thought that Sting was NOT singing "Free, free; set them free . . ." but was instead "Feet, feet; suck my feet." :lol2: I would not believe that except I heard him singing it that way one day and had to correct him. (I smacked him in the back of the head :thumb:)

In England Dan & John Ford Coley's cornball 1976 tune "I'd Really Like To See You Tonight", I could never figure out what he was singing in the first line of the chorus:

I'm not talking about movin' in

And I don't want to change your life

But there's a warm wind blowin' the stars are out

And I'd really love to see you tonight

Though it made no sense, all these years my brain kept hearing...

"I'm not talkin' 'bout the linen"

Though I could never say that I was fully convinced that what I thought I was hearing was what I was truly hearing, but until the Bob Seger thread, I always thought that "Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight" was "Betty Lou's Gettin' Married Tonight" where Bob just wasn't exactly fully saying married, but more or less "Gettin' Marred Tonight", as if to say that she was no longer available.
