If that is true it makes sense because starting next year Cooper is playing HHS.

As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Nobody would schedule Highlands in NKY. Ryle bailed them out a few years ago, but nobody wanted to play them. I doubt it was because all of these programs were scared of them.

I would tend to understand both sides of this. I think it might have had a little to do with perceptions of both. I have personally never seen Dale run up the score on purpose. However, I have seen him leave the starters in the first half and actually bring them out in the second half with very large leads. But what outsiders have to remember is that he needs his team to work and focus on things as well. Not being arrogant, but when starters don't have to play in the second half of several games and they aren't required to come out of the locker room ready to play after half for several games, then your team can potentially not be prepared when there is a need to come out focused. And I don't have any issues staying in for a full half, regardless of what the score is. They have to get their time in. And if 6A schools can't keep a 4A school from getting out of control in a 1st half of a game, then that school has bigger issues. So I can see where the perception is "he runs up the score", but that's never been the case that I have witnessed. Maybe is was the case at one time, I don't know. There was a time when I only followed them from afar for a few years, but the times I have seen them, I wouldn't call it "running it up".

I agree with your entire post. I have no issues with the starters playing the whole first half & first possession of the second. As an outsider I do think Dale got a reputation of running it up early in his career. The last 5 or so years I think that has softened but with that reputation I think coaches backed away from playing him.

The bolded statement isn't fair. I know you can't say certain things on this site, but just because one school may have bigger male enrollment numbers does not mean they have better players. That is the most ignorant crutch that people tend to throw out when talking about 6A or 5A schools etc.

 

More numbers is not a garuntee that they will have better athletes. You can look across the board at any High School sport and see that isn't always the case. Look at all the sports last year. How many sport state titles were won by the largest schools?

 

Even Football last year overwhelmingly the best team in the state wasn't a 6A school but a 5A school. Basketball a 4A school won the state tourney. Size doesn't equate to being better. You throw in there also that each school district is different also. Some can't "Bring" kids in from other districts just to bring them in while others can.

 

I personally haven't heard this myself but I hear Guru's GF said Size doesn't matter, so I believe it.

For over ten years I've seen him work hard not to put up triple digits on teams, often catching flak because his second and third teams were playing as much as the starters. THAT's the proof in the pudding. Very possible what I've seen the past ten years is not how he coached his early years, but that's not at all why NKY didn't play him.

**ND, SH, and Assumption are all large girl schools.

 

So out of 14 teams that played in the finals, 12 were large schools and 6 of the 7 sports I gave you were won by large schools. The other was Cov Cath in bball.
