I guess it's because I really think Warren Central is a clear #3. Maybe that doesn't justify my comment, but South Oldham and Cooper are in the same district I think so that will play out on the field. Plus doesn't South O play Anderson County this week? If so, that will be telling for this list come next week.

Central lost in a scrimmage to a very bad John Hardin team and then struggled to beat a 3A Bourbon Co. team that was missing several key players and that made a name for itself over the past year playing pretty much nobody. I'm still not sold on the Dragons. If Central fails to score a lot of points on 2A DeSales this week I will really not be sold on them. Not saying that Bourbon and DeSales are not good teams to be playing, but a top tier 5A team should be blowing those schools out. JMO.

How does Newcath stay at #4 after gettin throttled last week? and Newport gets no votes and WV only 2?

I think Cooper's defense is too much for Scott.

 

Have you seen Scott's offense this year?? Their offense, over the past few years, has consistently given almost every team they play fits, they have 3 above average running backs, and their passing game will be better this year. Yes they lost a lot from last year, but they've reloaded on this side of the ball, and the offense is the strength of this team. They will score points. I actually think it's the other way around. Scott's Defense is somewhat of a question mark, and they are lacking in depth. Just good offensive teams are going to give them trouble, and despite their offense being a strength, it's not designed to score quick, and they will have trouble winning a shootout. I still think Cooper belongs ahead of them, and is a darkhorse in 5A. They just have to survive these next 3 games.

I hear ya! And being a Purples fan speaking up for the Dragons should say something. All your words are true, but think about this. That scrimmage was the first time Central had the band together (new coaches, new players, etc.) at all. I don't place alot of stock in that and I still say Hardin, even though significantly down from years past, will be #4 in 5-A when its all said and done. Bourbon Co is a good team and everyone is missing a player or two. Desales will be a big test on the road - I agree. I'm just not sure you can say across the board that "a top tier" higher A team should be blowing out a lower A team especially this year when it seems that the elite one or two schools in the lower A range have been hanging with or beating good upper lever schools (ie Belfry over Henry Clay as an example).

 

I guess I'm saying I think Central is #3, but I also think Pulaski and BG are better and maybe by a lot and I probably wouldn't put them in your "top tier" category or any other 5A team this year, even though I've given Dragon Fire ammo for the 2 games BG will now play against his Dragons.

It should be a fun game to watch.

I don't disagree that Cooper probably has the edge. I just think that, believe it or not, this years Scott offense will ultimately be better than what they had last year. Again, their defense is suspect, and right now they also don't have much of a kicking game, which will hurt in any close game.

I'll honestly say I don't much if anything about Warren Central, but I do think that Madison Southern is probably too high in both polls.

Not since the KY Post went under, no. I'm assuming the Cincinnati Enquirer didn't have any say?

 

Probably not since they are based in Ohio but they probably should be since they have extensive coverage of NKY high school athletics.

Jim Weber told me that he doesn't get a vote, and I got confirmation from Joe Danneman (Cincinnati Fox 19's sports director) that, as far as he knows, no Cincinnati news outlets are extended an opportunity to vote. Interesting comment from him, though, about voting: "Probably a good thing I don't because outside of NKY, I don't see much of the rest of the state until playoff time."

 

So based on the fact that - Courier-Journal and Daily Independent aside - hardly a single one of these AP voters will see folks from NKY play before the playoffs begin, does that make the voting in the AP poll slanted? It doesn't just apply to NKY (although I think NKY suffers in particular due to it's complete lack of a voter), but it would also apply to the voting from essentially any news source when taking into account the teams from far out of their vicinity.

DeSales is a reigning state champ, who last year, beat 5-A semifinalist John Hardin and 6-A runner-up Meade (in a scrimmage).

 

DeSales beat Meade in a scrimmage again this year. ... fwiw, Meade is currently 2-0, has yet to give up a point and is ranked in the top 10 in 6-A in every major poll/ranking/rating.

 

Meade and John were "top tier" 5-A/6-A schools last year and were not close to "blowing those schools out" last year.

 

Bourbon's a good team. So is DeSales. DeSales appears to be a great team.

 

And I'm not from Louisville. Have zero ties to the Colts. But respect is given where respect is due, too.
