Saw something on Twitter this morning that said the police are saying the scuffle started in the back seat of the police car.

So, if true, they had him in custody. He was already frisked and made sure he was not carry weapons, if he was going into a squad car he should have been hand cuffed (I would think). Then he freaked and ran. And that justifies any shooting?

 

If we was not cuffed it would seems he was not being charged with a felony and apparently not deemed dangerous, he was not armed it seemed, and they should have had him ID'd for easy track down if needed. So why the need for deadly force just because he panicked?

Where did I say that it justified shooting? I only reiterated what Clyde said - there are conflicting reports of what actually happened. I have no idea what actually happened and neither does anybody else who has posted in this thread. I will reserve judgment until more facts are in.

The reporting related to this incident has been really bad so far, IMO. I noticed that the photo that accompanied this story is of a St. Louis County police car, the presser was held by the St. Louis County Chief of Police, but it was held at the Ferguson Police Department.

 

This begs questions such as what, if any relationship exists between the two police departments, and if the Ferguson Police Department is not a part of the St. Louis County Police Department, then when will it release its own statement?

I think St. Louis Co was called in as an outside department to investigate the shooting.

I assume that is the case but my point is the questions that I posed are basic questions that any competent reporter should have addressed in their articles. Shoddy journalism in the immediate aftermath of a shooting just invites the spread of misinformation. Unsavory characters like Al Sharpton will not miss an opportunity to spread false rumors and stoke the flames of racism.

It seems strange that a the residents of a city whose population is 70 percent black does not trust its own police department to investigate a shooting.

 

I don't understand why so many people believe that the federal government is more trustworthy than local and state governments. The federal government is full of corruption and the FBI should not be involved in routine local law enforcement matters.

I hear all kinds of stories about how local law enforcement doesn't like to cede authority to the feds. Maybe that's fiction; I do read a lot of crime fiction.

If the victim was white, do you think that the FBI would have been asked to participate in the investigation? It was the NAACP that made the request to the St. Louis County Police.

 

By calling the shooting "routine," I don't mean that it is a common occurrence - I mean that it does not seem to be a complicated set of facts that would require any special technical expertise or equipment. It seems like a job that any big city or state police department should be able to handle.
