Bluegrass Favorites

Featured Replies

I'm a lifelong bluegrass fan. I know there are a few others of you out there.

One of my favorite bands was The Country Gentlemen. Like many bluegrass bands, musicians come and go and they go through a lot of turnover. There was a time, in the late 70s when The Country Gentlemen was loaded with talent. On this song, bluegrass legends Charlie Waller, Doyle Lawson and Mike Auldrige are heard along with Bill Yates, Bill Holden and Ed Ferris.

This is one of my absolute favorite songs, and it is not that well known. It was recorded and released in the golden age of Bluegrass on the album Joe's Last Train in 1976. I love to listen to Charlie Waller, and the lyrics of this song speak to me.

Perhaps my favorite Bluegrass song of all time is The Legend of A Rebel Soldier. A song that tells the story of the last minutes of a Rebel soldier who is dying in a Yankee prison during the Civil War and thinking of his homeland.

I had never heard this LeAnn Womack version until recently, but it is hauntingly beautiful, plus she sings a 4th verse I had never heard.

You have to go to about the 3:20 mark to hear the song, it is beautiful and well worth the listen.

I like Bluegrass music. I didn't listen to it much when I was younger but grew to appreciate it more in later years.

Hyden, Ky. just completed the 3 day Osborne Brothers Bluegrass Festival yesterday featuring Bobby Osborne and the Rocky Top Express, Rhonda Vincent, Dailey and Vincent, IIIrd Time Out, Larry Sparks, and others. There were around 16 bands playing each day. I had tickets to go but was unable to make it. Probably a good thing I couldn't go though, because Leslie County had a ton of rain yesterday evening with flash flood warnings.

One of my favorites for several reasons

I love Bluegrass, but I always listen to it via radio shows where I scarcely pay attention to the artists and song names.

Jimmy Martin is one of my favorites. I like Ricky Skaggs a lot as well. (I met Ricky when he came to the Norton Center @ Centre with Emmylou. Great guy.)

I had this one on my mind this Sunday morning. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. I love me some Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

One more. This is my favorite hymn, although not many people know it.

I picture the Savior, with outstretched arms, offering peace and solace to all of us who are heavy laden with troubles. I get emotional every time I hear this one.

Same with me. I've always listened to it. Something about the voices...

There are some stations in the area that play it occasionally.

If Alison Krauss & Union Station qualify, they're my favorites. Not sure if Nickel Creek is technically BG/progressive BG but I like them a lot.

Nickel Creek's crossover hit:

This one's a bit more traditional. I saw them years ago at the Paramount in Ashland - very entertaining show.

A few years ago I attended the Wool Festival in Falmouth. I remember a very good bluegrass band, I think they were from Walton KY or most members were from Walton. I just cannot remember the name of the group.

One of my favorite albums (so they still call them albums anymore?) is "Down the Old Plank Road", a collaboration between The Chieftains and several country and Bluegrass artists. This is one of the songs:
