Are any Catholics getting tired of so many collections each week at church?

Featured Replies

I would like if church got back to just being mass. Seems theres a new cause for collections every week. I don't mind donating, but I'm getting hit with a lot of different causes. It almost makes me stay home.

Mass is so much more than collections. If a particular extra one makes you uncomfortable, let the basket go by. For some, however, they recognize the great need among others. We in the Western part of the world have so much to be grateful for since we easily are better off financially than most of the rest of the world. It is truly better to give than receive.

I agree with Pete! No one is pointing a gun to anyone's head to make them give.

The thing I like about second collections is the ability to control where my money is going. I know the first collection is going to the operations of the church. I know the second collection is going towards something separate, right now we are working to renovate our 100+ year old pipe organ. Since I enjoy the sacred music of my church, I give to that. If sacred music meant nothing to me and I preferred modern music in Catholic churches (not me), I would not give to it. It gives you control over what the church is doing with your money.

That organ is a remarkable and beautiful piece of artistry. I'd donate to that.

So, how much should I put you down for????

Back in the 90's the church did an update using Miller Pipe Organ but that was more of band aid, after a century, it needs much deeper than that. There is an old German guy up in Detroit who will probably be hired to come down with his son and just really gut the organ and bring it back to life. Much of the leather is dry rotted and just needs to be replaced and the motors on the pumps probably are not operating at optimal capacity to get optimal sound.

I agree or I wouldn't be in church every week. My issue is there's a steady stream of causes asking for money every week. I'd rather we just stick to the service. Divide up whatever you collect in the back. Last week it was inner city catholic schools. C'mon man. Theres no inner city catholic schools in N. Ky.

St. Augustine is one that's pretty close that immediately springs to mind...

Agreed.

Tired of the church asking me to give to their charities. I'll pick my own thanks.

I "Hate" the DPAA!

(And yes, I realize New Cath isn't necessarily made up of all students from "inner city" households, but there are still DEFINITELY students who attend who ARE from that background and whose families can't afford the school without assistance. Any guesses where the money that provides them that tuition assistance comes from?)

^ I love that. We lost all our inner city schools in the Louisville Archdiocese over the last few decades. The founding of Nativity Academy is a beginning to turning that around, but we're hurting big-time down here. That goes for a lot of the suburban schools too. The tuition is rising WAY too fast. A sudden surge in educating by nuns and brothers is about the only thing that can save them at this point. Too expensive to run otherwise.

Actually, sisters and brothers are not as cheap as they used to be also. When you hire them, you are now required to send salary and benefit type funds to their order which goes towards paying their healthcare and retirement, much more expensive than it used to be since we are living so much longer. Have you ever seen in the record when they announce the passing of sisters. It seems like all of those sisters make it to 95 or higher. Solemn Vows are almost like mini fountains of youth.
