I wouldn't rule out Tyler Addesa at MCHS. Right now he is flying under the radar, but his recruiting is going very well. He will be playing Fullback this year and OLB. With his size strength and speed he will be a force this year, especially at FB. It will be interesting to see the matchup between Eli Brown & Addesa when Meade plays Warren East. Addesa may not be a candidate right now for Mr. Football because he has not signed with a D1 school yet and isn’t from a mega media market. But, he has the potential to have a great season and help Meade return to the Championship game. Doubletake1906 had it right “Allow ALL the kids play speak for themselves, and keep an open mind instead of following the rest of the sheep.”

 

Mr. Football shouldn’t be about a players recruiting status (remember colleges recruit needs not the highest ranked player) or their Scouts , Rivals or 24/7 ranking( I’ve seen some of these kids in camp and they don’t look any better than anyone else) or popularity, it should be about Friday night when they put the pads on and strap it up.

I do always enjoy these threads. Despite there being only 2 maybe 3 realistic candidates we sure do have a lot of names.

"Clyde" there would be more realistic canidates if everyone would keep an open mind and let the season play out to see who should be Mr. Football. But I guess in the end the title is not really about the best player, but who gets the most PR.

It's not a stats contest, right? It's a beauty contest and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So even if many of these other players mentioned kill it in stats am I supposed to say they are "prettier" than Harris?

I agree Harris is the favorite... But not necessarily because he is the best player in KY (He maybe the best running back). He just has received the most PR because he is highly ranked by the media outlets. I think Mr. Football should be about more than TDs or Yards. But that’s why a lot of people don’t put a whole lot into these popularity or beauty contests.

You think a QB in a spread system playing 2-A should be Mr. Football every year? Neither do I, but if you base it ONLY/SOLELY on stats, that's what you're leaning toward.

I'm with you. It is about stats,BUT... It only comes down to stats with the players already on the voters top 5 list Pre-season.

 

The only time a defensive player will win is if he was one of the top 2 guys Pre season and the top offensive p,ayers don't get the stats to light it up. Other than that it will always be an offensive political vote. Like I said, there were players with better stats than last years eventual winner and the same for the year before through the majority of the season yet they were never even thought of. It's very political just like the majority of awards.

If it IS about stats, you've got guys who have done relatively nothing being thrown out there. (Yet blame the system they play in, which is something I ALREADY pointed out).

 

You don't get it both ways.

 

You're not going to have guys who weren't all-area or all-state (actually no where close) as juniors win Mr. Football or even make it to the Finalists lists. Will not happen. Has not happened.

 

And yes, offers are huge in this. I don't care if a kid has "interest" in 50 schools or who they have visited (PLENTY of kids do that, not just nationally, but in Kentucky). Interest and letters mean little to voters. Who has offered. Not talking walk-on DI, or DII offers or DIII (no athletic scholarships) or NAIA (who often sign 40 kids a year). Full-fledge DI offers.

 

Hate to bust your bubble, but kids with few stats entering their senior years, ones who specialize on defense (and not play QB, WR-TE, FB-RB), ones who transfer for their senior year and specifically ones who have never made All-State (which means they are way under the radar just in their local area, not to mention the state) ... are going to have a very very very hard time getting considered. Let alone winning.

 

I'm not from BG. Not in same time zone. Not in same region. I have no relatives who live there.

 

But Fant was very deserving last year. Either season based or career based or team based (multiple titles, great winning percentage). Although he chose to stay at home, he had a lot more actual offers than some players folks are throwing out there who would have a hard time making first-team all-state (let alone the one and only Mr. Football).

 

I don't care who wins. I have no ties to Sindelar, Harris, Ryan, Nero, Drake Jackson, Eli Brown, Emmitt Smith, etc. None of them. Not friends with them. Didn't go to school at their schools or their rivals.

 

But to think guys who have no preseason hype and nothing to base it on are going to come from the shadows and win Mr. Football as a darkhorse longshot ... that's crazy. Don't think it's ever happened.

I've seen several places, and also his twitter, which keep saying 25.5 sacks.

 

However, that number's been questioned. Just because you tackle a quarterback behind the line of scrimmage does NOT make it a sack arbitrarily. Don't get me wrong: HE HAD A LOT OF SACKS. He spent plenty of time in the backfield causing problems.

 

The 4.5 forty also doesn't seem to pass the muster. Not many kids in Kentucky have that type of wheels. If he really did, he'd have far more offers than he does considering he went to some big-time camps (got some one-on-one time at Tennessee's camp because of how well he played).

 

It's also concerting that out of all the folks who have posted/read this thread, a sack monster from a state champion with apparently 4.5 speed does NOT get mentioned until page SIX?
