Boyle County Rebels 2014 Football Preview

Featured Replies

The Boyle County Rebels 2013 season didn't go the way the Rebels would have liked it to have gone despite posting an 11-1 record. For the first time since 2007 the Rebels didn't advance past the second round of the playoffs after suffering a heartbreaking 31-30 loss from the hands of Mercer County. Ironically the coach of Mercer County, Chris Pardue, was the head coach at Boyle County the last time the Rebels didn't advance past the second round of the playoffs. This game proved to be the last game that Larry French was the head coach at Boyle County as Coach French took the vacant head coaching job at Southwestern. Once Coach French left his position as Boyle County head coach the Boyle County administration went all in on trying to lure newly named Madison Central coach, Chuck Smith, back to Boyle County to take over the football program. In what became one of the worst kept secrets in Boyle County, Coach Chuck Smith decided to return to Boyle County and take over the football program again.

In 2014 Coach Chuck Smith inherits a decent amount of talent and experience from last year's one loss team. Starting quarterback Josiah Robbins returns to take the snaps for the Rebels. Robbins has proven to be an adept dual threat quarterback who will be counted on heavily to be the leader of the team and the offensive unit. Robbins threw for 1,443 yards, 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions last season. Robbins also ran for 772 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. The Rebels lost leading rusher, Seph Burke, to graduation but Aidan Stewart-Hoskins will take over as the lead back for the Rebels. Stewart-Hoskins accounted for 458 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns last season. Reports are that Stewart-Hoskins is a little more lean this season and looking faster than ever in practice. Eric Brown also returns to the backfield and should have an opportunity to contribute to the offense. Receivers Keagan Hinkle, Jase Sharp, Nick Roney, Mack Cox and newcomer Zach Leigh will all have an opportunity to fill the void left with the losses of receivers Levi McKinney and Joe Shewmaker to graduation. As always the offense of a team will perform as well as its offensive line allows and if the newcomers to the offensive line can perform at an above average level then it will be an exciting offense to watch.

The defense will have to find a way to replace the presence of Seph Burke, Levi McKinney and Austin Bell. Those three players alone accounted for 277 tackles combined. How many players will play both ways is an unknown at this point but last year Josiah Robbins, Eric Brown, Aidan Stewart-Hoskins, Mack Cox, Keagan Hinkle and Nick Roney all saw time on the defensive side of the ball. While it will not be a surprise if they all play both ways again this year it will be interesting to see who will step up and be the leaders on the defense. With Coach Smith back in town and Coach Jeff Hester still on the staff I imagine that the defense will be up for the challenge and will be as good as we always remember the defense to be when Coach Chuck Smith is the head coach.

How good will Boyle County be in 2014 is the number one question on everyone's mind when talking about this upcoming football season. Can Chuck Smith work his magic? Will the players buy in? Will the expectations sour the results? As of today the answer to all of those questions is "who knows". However, the excitement around this upcoming season is very high and regardless of how this season plays out it is a good thing to be able to once again call Chuck Smith the Boyle County head coach. Welcome back, Coach Smith and good luck this season!

I'll also add that Boyle County returns kicker Addison Coffey this season. Kickers can sometimes be the butt of the joke in football but the importance of a kicker returning with the experience and the foot that Coffey has should not be understated.

I don't think we can learn much about them with that schedule. Football season is better when Boyle is good, but the schedule doesn't pose much challenge.

Depends on how they win. I expect them to be undefeated when the playoffs start but we can learn quite a bit if they dominate their opponents or simply defeat them. Last year they were undefeated when the playoffs rolled around but they weren't as dominating when they won games last season. They found ways to win and sometimes ways to not lose but they didn't dominate games like they would when they would make deep playoff runs.

I think we all know what the great teams look like regardless of their schedule.

Good point.

Smith back on Boyle Co. sidelines

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – For the past 20 years, Boyle Co. has been one of the most consistent football programs in Kentucky. The architect of the Rebels dynasty is back on the sidelines this fall.

Chuck Smith, who left to coach the linebackers at UK, returns to Danville where it all started for him.

"I don't accept losing very well at all,” he said. “It's pressure that I put on myself and I'll always do that as long as I am coaching. I think that is what competitive people do anyway."

Smith took a program from the ground up in 1992 and in seven seasons turned Boyle County into a juggernaut. Now, Smith is hoping to do it again. But it will take time.

Could be 2 or 3 losses going into playoffs

I think LexCath and Madison Southern could be roadblocks. I think they'll defeat everyone else. I'm not sold on Madison Southern having a better team and the LexCath game is almost always a tossup but I'll still take Boyle in that one. I think Mercer County has lost too much to defeat Boyle this year. Mercer County is the only other team I think is capable of defeating Boyle on the schedule.

Looking at the schedule I think (potential) losses could be Catholic, Mercer, Mad. South, and maybe Anderson. I think they could loose 2 of those games.

Hopefully Robbins can stay healthy, they rely so much on him to carry the load. If he even has to sit out half a game for a cramp I think it makes Boyle extremely vulnerable.

I'm not sure who the backup quarterback is. If I had to guess I'd say Keagan Hinkle.

I'm not sure either but I would think you are correct. It would definitely change the dynamics of their offense.

Robbins will be exciting to watch this year!

Looking forward to keeping up with the Rebels this season...I'd say 10-0 or 9-1 regular season and then let it rip in the playoffs.

We'll all have a better feel for this team and how far they may go as we get into the season. If/when the Boyle D get's back to playing Chuck Smith D, they'll be ready to play with anyone in their class. If that is this season or later, the Boyle D will be the key to it all during this run for Coach Smith and the Rebs!

Agreed. I don't want to put Brandon Smith expectations on him but I do think he could be another version of Brandon Smith.

During a 7 on 7 scrimmage that I saw, Nick Roney was the other QB that Boyle used after Robbins. He did a nice job, accurate with his passes and made good decisions.
