July 18, 201412 yr Staten Island man dies after NYPD cop puts him in chokehold ? SEE THE VIDEO - NY Daily News Sad. Guy had asthma and died when the police tried to take him down. The police are going to catch heck for this but they gave the guy plenty of chances to put his hands behind his back. I do not know if the arrest was warranted and I can't say I fully appreciate what the man may have gone through with the police in the past. Unfortunate.

In 1994 a security guard, Anthony Baez, died in the Bronx after a police officer put him in a chokehold during a dispute over a touch-football game. After the officer, Francis X. Livoti, was acquitted in state court on homicide charges, he was found guilty in federal court and served a seven-year sentence for violating Mr. Baez’s civil rights.
July 18, 201412 yr City is going to be writing checks in this affair . from the video I never heard an officer ask him to be restrained or handcuffed , Looks to me like they just attacked the guy who had not done anything , when did he ignore their orders ? shame , no amount of money will bring that guy back . For some stupid charge like selling cig's .

July 19, 201412 yr I read a report today that said he likely died of a Heart Attack not from suffocation or from being choked...even though that doesn't fit most peoples narrative if it is true.

I don't know what he was being arrested for but when he said, "You've been harassing me, This ends today" then coupled with his refusing to be cuffed is what escalated the entire thing. Man has been arrested 31 times so he knows how to act and not act when getting arrested.

The officer in question has lost his badge and gun while being under investigation. I will say the man should not have resisted arrest, but am still interested in seeing what happens because a choke hold is against the rules for NY cops. The video in the above link also says they are warned against standing or sitting on a suspect because it can inhibit breathing. I am not claiming being choked led to the man having a heart attack but it would seem rules were broken. I eventually see the conversation becoming whether or not it was an actual choke. If the officer who applied the choke hold is found to be in the wrong, does anyone question why the other cops did nothing to stop him? Should they have? I have no idea and I doubt it would even register with me in the moment to tell him that's against the rules.

I don't know if he choked him or not but you can grab someone from behind like that to control them without choking them. While it looks bad on video if the person is talking through out the incident, they ARE NOT having a choke hold applied.

I don't disagree with any of your logic but if the man died while in a chokehold that isn't allowable then that is an issue.
July 20, 201412 yr Had a similar case where a woman was beating up a loss prevention guy at a store and he grabbed her in a similar manner to get her on the ground. She weighed about 300lb (he was about 160) and fell right back on top of him pinning him to the floor. The video looked horrible as it looked like he was choking her but he never applied pressure to her to choke her and she was yelling and screaming the entire time.
July 21, 201412 yr I read yesterday where the officer in question has also been the center of controversy in two cases that eventually settled out of court and the charges he brought against two other men in those incidents were completely dropped before even making it to trial. That's not going to help his cause any.
