I'm just curious of what other high schools around the state do on game day before or after each game. Traditions, not "pre-game rituals". A tradition that has happened year after year for thirty, forty, fifty, or even a hundred years. Is there a sign they tap before they take the field? Is there a phrase they chant before each game?

This is a fairly new thing seeing how Cooper is only 6 years old, but after their State Championship game run in 2012, they had a motto they played by and that motto was "One Team, One Dream"

So before the season started last year a sign was made and hung on the wall next to the door leaving their locker room that they can slap as they head out to the field before each game. I hope it's still there, if not I hope someone gets in touch with me so I can get a replacement. Would love for it to be there ritual for generations to come.

 

I played for Wyoming HS in cincy. About 1/2 mile before getting to the oppenents field the seniors woulod start the chant that every one would join in on. The closer we got to the field the faster and louder we got. By the time we got into the parking lot that bus was rockin'. Talk about being fired up. I'm sure we won some intimidation points. Not sure whether or not it's still done, but on the bus ride home after winning away games, the team knew where to start things on the road so we could sing exactly two go-arounds of the Cov Cath Fight Song and have the second one finish just as the buses pulled in to park.

After all Trinity games -- win or lose -- the players head over to the stands and sing the fight song with the other students. That was always my favorite.

- For "Big Games" Belfry always wears a special pair of Red Pants

- It is tradition for Belfry Linemen to don Face Paint for big playoff games

 

 

A more recent Pirate tradition has been the banners to run through to enter the field during their playoff runs. Almost everyone does these, but over the past few years Belfry has raised eyebrows and created a little controversy because each one has contained a Bible Verse.

Watusi I am sure can speak better for this...but I always heard it had something to do with a game early in Haywood's tenure where the Pirates actually took a charter bus against the Haywood's best wishes and promptly stunk up the field. After that game he vowed "Never Again" and has kept his word.

when I was at NewCath win or lose you sang the school fight song on the ride up to the hill then when you got off the bus you went straight for the Grotto and the team said prayers. we said prayers at the Grotto before the game also. If you lost the game the rules were no noise till the bottom of The Hill.

Probably lots of teams do this. Mason County player with "the biggest hit" the week before carries a sledgehammer the next (home?) game when the players walk in the stands in front of the home crowd just before game time.

At Raceland, I'm not sure how many years this has been here, but ever since I could remember, on game day, when you enter and exit the field house, you smacked the sign below with either your hand, your helmet your shoulder or whatever. You acknowledge that it is there (hence the orange paint and dirt). Also, before we run out of the Morgan tunnel, also pictures below, all players join hands and the head coach says "Team where?" and the team replies with "first". Then he will say "self where?" and everyone one says "last". Immediately after that the coach kneels with the players and we all say the Lord's Prayer. Also, after every win, we sing the fight song in the locker room, same as basically every team. Lol
