I really don't know but it sure seems to me that a photo id would be required to sign up for medicare, Medicaid or other assistance available to the elderly. Or at least the same documents to establish eligibility could be used for the photo id.

I believe it is needed to sign up for each of those.

 

My unscientific guess would be that 95%+ of those without ID's aren't interested in voting any way.

 

For those working, it's isn't or shouldn't be a hardship as all employers are supposed to verify the ID of all new hires. 99% bring either a Drivers License or State Issued ID card...so it shouldn't be an issue for them to show an ID when voting.

 

For those not working but receiving any kind of government benefit, an ID was needed to sign up for the benefit...so it shouldn't be an issue for them to show an ID when voting.

 

As for those in the country illegally, I see where they may not have an ID, but they also don't have the right to vote either...so it shouldn't be an issue for them either.

 

I struggle to understand who the masses are that are being disenfranchised by needing to show an ID to vote. Yes I know there are a few instances, but those are few and far between.

Here's another massive irony. And be advised that this is strictly a guess on my part.

 

I truly believe that the voter ID/restriction/whateveryouwannacallit actions have already and will continue to galvanize organizations such as AARP as well as political campaigns. This will, more than ever, get more and more people more active than ever who see themselves as helping the disenfranchised.

 

Although I believe the intent behind such legislation is misguided at best, I don't think that the consequences will turn out as intended.

 

But again, that's just a guess and not based on anything concrete.

 

AARP may try to help there. They are certainly not 'neutral' in the political spectrum.

 

But the Repubs can be very tone deaf and the guy from Pennsylvania was certainly out of touch.

 

Unfortunately there is a ballot box war underway. The petty tactics have escalated and it the more pure electronic voting, early voting where votes are laying around - electronically - for days or even weeks seems fraught with fraud potential on a large scale.

 

The pendulum on this issue is swinging more than it has in the past. IDs will not fix electronic mischief as described above. But its also obvious that administration does not want people even looking into the process when the IRS targets groups who simply train poll watchers viciously and Rep. Cummings misrepresents and lies about what they do and incorrectly accuses them of racism. Clearly there is a factor of intimidation and targeting of people who are trying to improve things beyond just ID requirements.

 

The system originally had to rely on personal and institutional integrity at some level. Sadly, that appears gone and now the system will have to be rebuilt with the assumption that people and parties can and will trying anything to win.

I believe I read recently that about 22 million American adults lack a photo ID -- about 1 in every 11 potential voters. Many people have no need to drive a car or get a passport.

So what? You can still get a ID card.

The 13 hours included the bus ride to and from the license office. Some people don't have cars ... remember? Hamilton County, Ohio (Cincinnati) also recently moved its voting office so it's less accessible to people who rely on public transportation.

Once again you lack sufficient information. I believe Ohio's Secretary of State, a Republican, cast the deciding vote to move the Hamilton County election site from downtown Cincinnati to the end of a bus line. Can't continue to make it too easy for those inner-city voters to cast early ballots for Obama or Mrs. Clinton.
