Next Mexican soldier who crosses the border without going through proper channels will either be detained or shot . Sounds extreme but they have disrespected the border to often and for to long. Actions must have consequences.

Our soldier was non uniform in a civilian car . Their soldiers flew a military helicopter across the border and took shots at our agents. Let's not play the silly we are equally as bad game.

 

Also Mexico and United States aren't on equal footing on any negotiations. We basically prop their entire economy up. Sorry if I don't give them the same respect as I do our soldiers. Half the soldiers who cross our borders are on cartel payrolls .

A message . Mexico over the last decade has had over 500 occurrences crossing our border illegally with soldiers. This isn't even the first time they have shot at us. I'm not blaming anyone for past actions . I'm saying here in the present a message needs to be sent. Mexican soldiers need the fear of God put in them so they don't even think about putting their big toe across the border again let alone shoot at an American officer.

He took a wrong turn at standard border crossing that had very poor temporary signage. He did not disrespect the border.

We need to give the chopper crew the benefit of the doubt.

 

Maybe they were chasing a dangerous international criminal who was smuggling guns from the US into their country.

What is the message you propose sending that will put the fear of God in them?

Shooting down the hostile helicopter would have been an excellent start. Using the U.S. Marines to repatriate a few thousand illegal aliens by delivering them deep into Mexico (its southern border, preferably) would be a nice follow-up action.

However, if I'm Obama I call the Mexican President and strongly suggest he might want to make a show of goodwill and release the US soldier to soothe passions. Do it privately so he can save face.

I didn't say a military response . I did say a threat though. This isn't even close to the first time something like this has happened .

When it's happened before with Mexican soldiers we happily let them go back. When one of ours ACCIDENTALLY crosses the border and cooperates with the authorities he gets thrown in prison.
