What are some ideas to reduce our food budget?

We buy meat in bulk at Sam's. Case price bulk, not just a single item. They have really good ground beef (90/10) which we buy 80 lbs. at a time. Same thing on pork loins which we eat in a variety of ways. Boneless/skinless chicken breasts prices can't be beat - from their meat dept, not the frozen bags. Lasts awhile, but with 3 teenage sons, not as long as you might think!!

My mom had about a hundred ways to cook chicken.

Mine did also, hearing her list her chicken dishes was reminiscent of Bubba and his shrimp in Forest Gump.

Sam's Club or CostCo.

The $55 membership is well worth it. Pays back in the first or second trip.

The oversized items are usually good deals. But some items you have to be careful on. Like paper towels and TP. And beer and liquor are not usually that good on price - at least at Sams.

Example of savings: 3 pack of frozen pizza (California thin Pepperoni) - $9 or $3 each. At regular grocery these would be $5.99 each, maybe $4.99 on sale at best. So $6 to $9 savings on one item.

Twin-bags of cereal, Peanut Butter, shredded Mexican cheese, Kung Pao Chicken, frozen salmon, On-the-border chips, big jar (real big) of sliced jalapenos for only $3.99, spaghetti or angle hair pasta, 3-pak of Ragu sauce, Big container of Parmesan cheese etc. are all on our usual list. Usual bill is between $100 and $200 and I figure we are saving at least 20% off regular grocery store prices. So maybe saving $20 to $40 each trip or more.

I finally bought a a small freezer and keep in garage and years of pushing by the Mrs. It makes bulk buying of frozen items easier. And she never lets me forget she wanted it years earlier.

The wife does our shopping, and I know she tries to save money at the store. She buys almost all our meat at Sam's. She'll get a large pork loin that I'll cut into thick and thin chops, along with leaving a nice sized piece of the loin for a crock pot meal. She'll get the large pack of fresh, boneless, chicken breasts. They're typically so thick that I'll slice them down the middle to turn one piece into 2. She'll also get the large double pack of ground turkey which I'll split into 4 meals. Lastly, she'll get the large pack of fresh chicken legs that I'll split into separate bags for about 4 meals.

I just learned about a really neat app today, called Checkout 51. Each week, they have a list of foods that if you buy them and scan in your receipt, you earn money back. Once you've earned at least $20, you can "cash out" and they will send you a check. From there, you can start logging new buys.

I received a $1.00 credit just for signing up and earned 0.50 on strawberries that I had already purchased today.

What do you all budget for food per month? We have 5 in my house and spend around 400 a month or so?

Please tell me that three of those are not teen or college boys (plus their friends). If so, that is amazing and we need to know the secret.

Haha no I'm the only guy in the house.. 3 girls all below the age of 10, with one being 1. I think we are lucky right now, then again we eat out a lot on the weekends so the inflates our true cost to around $500. I eat twice a day and my wife sets about 1.5x a day. I figured we were fortunate with the grocery bill right now.

Substitute Aldi's for krogers or walmart

If you buy the large whole pieces of meat at Sams like that pork loin the butcher there will cut it for you any way you want and re-wrap it. Just ring the bell and ask.

Great teamwork! :thumb:
