This year they will be led by senior Macy Wright (all 8th region), and Shelby Harmeyer who started varsity last yr as an 8th grader. That coupled with a strong sophomore class that went 15-4 as freshmen , including beat downs of SK , WV, and St . Henry frosh to name a few, the future looks bright down in th country!

Too many people on here ready to give SK the 8th region title and I'm asserting they are too young for that kind of talk. Heck, they are no shoe in for the District title.

And I would argue that inconsistency plagues every non-elite team in girls basketball. One of your main things as a coach in this game is to limit that inconsistency and have your team firing on all cylinders by the end of the year. I could be absolutely wrong about SK. They may slump a little longer than they should later in the year than they should, but I think that's doubtful. They may lose a game here and there early on by deficits that make it look like they are going to epically struggle. But when it's all said and done I would be shocked if it wasn't them and Anderson Co. in the finals if the draw works out that way.

Yes they did lose the Martin girl. She is at NDA. But there is a lot of good young talent coming up. Their biggest issue is with their bigs. They need one of them to step up and own the middle.

May want to slow down on where to place the regional banner at in the gym. Most schools have freshman girls that are very good play at the junior varsity or varsity level. Some schools even have 8th and 7th graders just doing varsity. I know SK had several girls on the jv or varsity team, and didn't even play freshman at all. I am not saying that the Sophmore class isn't talented, but beating up, especially on smaller schools freshman teams, does mean that this team is going to dominate the region. Time will tell the next few years how this class turns out.

In the 9th Holy Cross looked like the most talented team I saw. Turner gives them the outside threat and scoring guard they have lacked when teams are able to pack it in. They took NCC down to the wire and add a all region guard. Highlands looks like #2 from what I saw right now, but it's early and a lot can change.

Well you guys seem to be missing one of the other teams of 9th region. Although HC & Highlands will be good again. You all fail to mention Holmes, who has a pretty good chance. With them returning 4 out of 5 last years starters & having a ranked player in Ohio transfer to them should put them in the top 3 of one of the hardest regions.

Didn't realize they got a top transfer, but yes Holmes is very talented. I like their team and Coach Perkins does a great job.

Well I've been keeping an eye on this one but chose not to say anything about SK until I learned a littl more. I know about Neace and she is a nice player, but I don't know the other young players people are referring to. Can someone post their roster?

 

However I will say that unless the 8th is down, I don't see SK winning the region with young talent. I know a lot of talent in the 8th left via graduation, but I think there is still some nice tenured talent in the region. And I agree with all the things you brought up and one other thing that makes it tough for young teams to win high school regions is experience and just the pure size and strength of older girls. Young kids can be talented, but when push comes to shove in a regioanal tournament, bigger and more experienced girls with even lesser talent can take over. And you mentioned the length of the season, topped with playing older, more physical girls where's the younger more fragile girls down. Then confidence sometimes follows. Not saying it will happen to SK, but it is something I have absolutely seen happen in the past. Young teams start out hot because they are fired up and fresh and wear down three quarters thru the season. Sometimes the bodies and mind just get wore out at the younger ages. Sure, we can all find exceptions to the rule, but I bet I'm right for the majority.

Holmes is going to be very good. But they won't sneak up on anyone this year after the year they had last year. I think I would give HC the early edge with HHS and Holmes right there. However, I don't see HC dominating. Still have some shooting concerns and still have depth issues. And if a team can shoot, run and pressure the ball (just like the two teams right behind them), they are able to give HC fits.

 

And yes ND and NCC lost some key players, but still have some very talented players in the tank. Boone too should be decente and Ryle and Conner's youth is maturing.

 

It should be a very exciting year in the 9th.

I'm not sure I want to get in the middle of this but this sounds a whole lot like coaches bashing caliperi

I will side with coach cal. I would take talent with experience any day. Will see if sk can follow suit They do have talent coming in and I'm not sure the pg is the one that will lead them in the end. Some other players have a whole lot of upside and have already played against 'older' girls and been very successful.

I do agree that it may be a reach to win the 8th but if things come together they will have a shot

 

Wv grant and Shelby will be very good as well with grant having a strong young nucleus. They will have to develop depth to contend down the road though

 

Holmes will also contend. They have and excellent transfer coming from Newport. She will probably prove out to be one of the top athletes in the 9th. They better not be overlooked this coming year.

Gallatin will be a tough out come March. They have the best player in the 8th and the returning players have valuable tournament experience.
