How does Highland have more experience. HC loses a senior starter but gains the best player in the region who has been a varsity starter for 3 years. They have 4 returning starters and Hassart is back also who was hurt for most of the season last year. Not sure on your info on this one. Highlands is good but I don't think you can say they have more experience and better versality than Holy Cross. HC has one of the top pg, sg and two post players in the region enough said

I don't know every region well enough to make all these picks....hats off to ya.

 

A few comments on what little I am familiar with....

 

5th - Clearly the top of the 5th...and I am assuming the state.

 

12th - I saw Mercer County scrimmage in early June. They were fast, shoot lights out, and very, very deep. Played great unselfish basketball.

 

16th - I was also very impressed with Ashland watching them at Coastal Carolina team camp. Very athletic and play hard.

 

8th - I am not sure about SK being the favorite in the 8th. They lost all 5 starters and one or two players off the bench to graduation. This was probably 95% of their scoring. I would give the top team of the 8th to either Shelby County or Walton Verona. In my opinion, the 8th region will be very competitive by seasons end. It will not be as "top heavy" this year with Anderson and SK losing so much talent and depth.

 

9th - I won't be near as hard on you for the picking Highlands as gobigblue was. Highlands very well could end the year atop the 9th. Holy Cross certainly could as well, especially looking at them on "paper" 5 or so months before they play their first game. As you said, it's a tough call.

My logic: Although HC returns their core group and adds a talented guard, Highlands returns their entire starting lineup plus some, only graduating Blanton who is a terrific athlete but not one of their defining players. That means Highlands will be starting the exact same group it started when they lost in the regional tourney. HC can't say the same. I understand the argument for HC incredibly well, and like I said, it's really, really close. Also, the point I was making with versatility points at the fact I don't expect HC to win many games against teams that can get out and run. Highlands has the ability to win both slug fests and track meets.

I will say the 9th will be very interesting as far as HHS and HC. On paper, HC should be very good. But that's on paper. I'm still not sure how they fair against a team that packs the paint. I know the HC brethren are looking at their new guard as the next coming, but I'm not sure that will answer all their outside shooting issues. Is she a better outside shooter than what they had, probably. But I don't consider her a "lights out" shooter from outside. Her game is decent outside shooting combined with the ability to get to the basket. A packed in zone takes away the "getting to the basket" part...for more than one player. So if you pack it in and jump the only shooter they have, I'm not sure how much that changes how you defend HC differently from last year. They will still be forced to make shots from outside. If they do, they are very good. If they don't, they are as beatable as last year.

 

Where I think they will actually be better is on defense. But it depends on what they choose to play. Do they get out and trap with tucker, McClendan and Turner or do they pack it in again, relying on the bigs to make it hard to score. I think they get more athletic with the addition of Turner on defense. Just don't know if they use that or not.

 

I also think the chemistry will be more of a challenge than most think. Not going to go into that too much because I get labeled a hater from the HC groups, but I think it will be tough. Just being honest. My feeling is that it will appear fine at the beginning. Things will go great. The excitememt will be there and winning overshadows a lot of things. But once the grind of the season sets in and the schedule becomes tougher and the games mean more and the headlines of the papers start coming to life, I think that will be the test if they have the chemistry to really make a run. If they can make it work, this HC team can be scary good IMO. If outside factors creep in, it could be an implosion. At the end of the day, they are females, they already have a few established uncoming stars and they are adding a star that has been the main focal points on her previous teams. Thats not always easy to do. I know you think I'm hating, but I'm actually just pointing out some reality.

 

If they do win the region, I will be rooting for them to make a great run at state. I promise I don't hate them!!!! They have a one-time shot to do something really special. That pressure can weigh on you as well.

The other factor in the 9th will be the transfer that Holmes got. Tibbs is a very nice player and will contribute on a high level from day one. This puts Holmes up near the top as well.
