Should 19 year olds be allowed to play High School Football?

Featured Replies

One big reason you have kids graduating so young is that SOME parents can't wait to get kids started in school and will start them as early as possible. They want the school to be a baby sitter to watch the kids during the day so they can get out and do what ever.

You just went there and I love it.

Bingo.

Unless you have a summer birthday there are all kinds of cool age scenarios that can come into play. I was born in July. I graduated high school at 17 and started college at 18. I have 2 kids that were born on Halloween. Both will be 18 a majority of their senior year. Had they needed to be held back for any reason my son who plays basketball would be 19 the whole basketball season his senior year. Honestly, that would be awesome. :lol2: I have another kid who was born in March. He needed to be held back at an early age. He was 19 when he graduated high school. He's going to the University of Cumberlands next year.

Everybody is different and all should be granted their 8 semesters and 4 years to play.

The 19 I'm hs thing isn't a big deal. Also like what has been said before parents start their kids as soon as they can to get out of daycare costs or for other reasons. Where this is an issue is in MS athletics. A 13 year old against a 15 year hold with both being in the 8th grade can be a big difference.

Don't take this the wrong way, but most would find it weird that you are 19 and already a junior in college. Which, for the record...kudos to you. And, I mean that. You are far and away an exception more than the rule.

I don't understand why it would be weird, I started college when I was 17. Personally, I think the cutoff should be before its current date. For people to hold there kids back simply for sports is not the correct message, since most won't make it to the next level anyway. Do the right thing and get started with your education so you can get a job.

Why should parents be forced to start their kids early in school? A 19 yr old hs male is more mature and ready to act right in college. Why push kids out of the nest into the real world faster than you need to.

I couldn't give a rip why parents want to hold their kids back. If it's academic, behavioral (social maturity), athletic or a mix of the three. All three are and can be key components to success.

Problem with kids who play sports that are held back/started late is that it will always be perceived that Johnny is being held back for sports. However, if Johnny didn't play sports, yet was a member of the band/speech and debate teams..then nobody would care.

Maybe I read it wrong...If "going to be a junior" that makes more sense, if currently are a junior (how i interpreted it...finishing up/going to summer school, etc), and about to go into his senior year of college at 19 this fall or 2nd semester, then I would consider that to be more exception.

I couldn't imagine sending my barely 17 old girl off to college. I know what happens in college.

No. Go pass a class or your GED instead

You got that right.

Both of my Sons graduated at 17. The elementary schools they went to wanted to advance to higher grades because they are smart. They both choose to stay with there class. I am sure some parents allow there kids to be moved to a higher grade also.

My daughter is going to be 20 when she starts her Senior year of college. She plays on her college softball team. We did not send her to school early because we needed a babysitter (my wife does not work).

If I were a lawmaker....5 by August 1st, in all 50 states.

If parents have reason to choose differently, then so be it.

^^That's going to be us with our oldest daughter. She is a mid August baby. Told my wife, I don't care if she is 4 for only one day in school before she turns 5....ain't happening.

19 year olds need to be allowed to play for those who legitimately need an extra year to complete school. Unfortunately this opens up a loop hole for some parents to give their son or daughter an advantage by allowing them to compete against kids who are predominately a year younger than them.

If you need an additional year to compete high school academically, you should lose that final year of athletic eligibility. JMO

You get 8 semesters/4 years of high school athletics. Most 19 year old seniors were held back before high school. I'm thinking anyone who repeats an academic year in high school doesn't get an extra year of athletics. They most likely would be academically ineligible to play anyways.
