Johnson Central 8 Tates Creek 4 ( KHSAA State tournament)

Featured Replies

Golden Eagles upset the #1 team in the state. Congrats JC!!

Congrats to Johnson Central! Would love to see them beat "Louisville" after beating "Lexington".

Don't see how a team can go to State and not throw their #1 first game. Smh.

It's often called "overconfidence".

I honestly don't think so in this case. They threw their number two who had beaten LexCath in the district finals & pitched another flawless game in the Region, the kid wasn't some slappy that they pulled off the end of the pine. Sometimes it doesn't go your way. If it was my team I would have done the same thing. There isn't a coach out there that doesn't think like a chess player & have moves mapped out in advance for the "just in case" types of games. Looking @ the 2nd round "if" they would have gotten there & seeing St. X as a possibility, who wouldn't do it.

When it's a single elimination tournament, no game is a given. You have to win the first to get to the second.

The only issue, is in this format, it does no good to look ahead to round two if you don't make it to round two. In a one and out, tomorrow's possible game is nowhere near as important as today's game. Especially if the team you are playing is throwing their best.

To be fair, with St. X potentially looming in Round 2, if I had been Tates Creek I probably would have thrown my #2 pitcher against Johnson Central as well. And of course, I would be going home early.

I know this as well. I was a member of a state title team that didnt throw their #1 in the first round. It can work, it just didnt this time, that is all I am saying.

You never, ever do that in a state tourney game or any other tourney you are interested in winning with a single elimination format.......
