I'm saying having a monthly car payment is a bad financial decision unless you are very wealthy. A car gets you from A to B and only goes down in value. You can get a used Toyota or Honda payment free for a little more than what it cost to put down on a lease.

You're not getting a dependable family car for your wife and children for $2k.

Leasing sounds good for me in the sense that I'd like to have a new car every few years. It doesn't sound good to me because you can't "customize" the car, and I drive too many miles, just for work, to lease.

I said for a little more you could say 4500-5500. I just don't like leasing, when you're giving it back. If you buy a new car and get 10 years out of I think that's a good deal.

 

But like you said they might have money to spend/play with right now. Cars are obviously a need but one of the worst expenses/investments we make.

And that is what a lot of it comes down to for me. People will play the "investment" angle, but there is some subjectivity to that.

2 downsides to leasing for me.

 

I drive too many miles a year and get a nice bill for miles at the end of the lease.

 

I don't like the garbage "mocks and dents" that are actually normal wear and tear that today they charge you couple thousand for when you turn it in.

Lease turning Veh in at dealer but the last couple I leased you have to turn it in at another place and they automatically charge you for wear and tear and claim

It's more than that which it is t. Happened with last 2 cars we leased. I don't like having to pay 2k at the end of a lease.

It just doesn't work out very well for me but neither does financing a brand new ride so I buy a high-quality depreciated used vehicle and bury it with miles.

I've looked more and more on Craigslist but I usually end up on a Cars.com/Autotrader and then end up on a dealer's website and lot. I pretty much know I'm buying by the time I get to the lot.

 

I will say this. There are a lot of low-priced used cars out there that are in good shape as long as you're willing to take on the risk and you realize you may turn them over every 2 years.

I am with you in being ready to buy when I get to the lot. And I don't do the price negotiation with a salesman. I tell him up front: "Here's how I do this. I'll ask questions about the car and we'll talk about it & then I'll make an offer. You accept my offer or I leave without the car." My intent isn't to be mean, but I'm not doing all that back & forth "let me go talk to my manager" crap.

Because I've rented a lot of cars. They get beaten up and I don't think they are well-maintained.

I've rented a couple of times, but don't have a great deal of experience with them.
